I have just purchased my first tractor, a 1963 Massey Ferguson MF 50 w/loader and several implements for a good deal. The unit needs some TLC and I was thinking of some new paint. I want to do it right, but I don't want to spend a fortune on materials as it's going to be a work horse but I want it to look better. I was thinking of sandblasting it, and primering and painting. The sheet metal is actually in really good shape. Is the regular tractor paint really that bad? I keep seeing the PPG name on this forum. I always remember that as being ridicoulously expensive. Thanks.

I agree with NOT sandblasting the whole tractor. I just finished restoring a 46 Farmall A and took the whole thing apart. Several parts that I thought I could seal up and blast without completely dismantling eventually had to be taken apart and througly cleaned. Blast media finds its way into everything, and the last thing you need is grit in your bearings. If you aren't going to take it apart down to individual pieces that can be safely blasted, then you need to use good old elbow grease and chemicals.

I guess nevermind on the PPG, I just called my local ppg retailer, and they want $400 for a gallon of red, and a gallon of grey. I will use the $40 a gallon tractor paint found on the web. Like I say it's going to be a work horse and I'm sure it will look better than it is.

You don't need $400 paint. Ask about the PPG Omni line. Somewhere around $70-80, if you use hardener it will probably exceed $100 a gallon, but it's good paint and won't fade as fast as what you are considering using. As has been mentioned before on this page, paint retailers are not your best friends. Do your homework first and TELL them what you want, don't ask.

I just bought a gallon of the Dupont Nason a few weeks ago,it was about $110.. Actually the cheap stuff will work ok,if you can store the tractor out of the sun..I think that is the death of the cheap paint.. I"ve got a `38 JD unstyled A that I painted with the van sickle $20 a gallon stuff from the ag store,it stays inside and still looks good after 2 years..but don"t sandblast unless your willing to dissassemble the whole thing, just clean it up best you can with degreasers, oven cleaner whatever and pressure washer..
