I'm geting ready to paint my 70 and I was wondering if The john deere classic green
is a good paint or should I go with some of these other paints that everyone is talking about. What's the difference?

Hi James,

I haven't used JD paint but I'll offer a general opinion. It's not the brand but the paint chemistry that determines paint "goodness" or quality. All paints are "good" but some are "better" (and cost more) than others. DuPont has an older but excellent explanation of the basic paint chemistries used in the automotive industry. Basically this all boils down to the fact that synthetic (alkyd) enamels are "good", acrylic enamels are "better" and the urethanes are "best". This should hold true without regard to the brand label as long as it is a recognized brand that has been in business long enough to have a reputation. The synthetics are known to be premature faders. The acrylics are better in this respect and the urethanes are the best in both fade and chemical resistance. Synthetics are old technology and are basically obsolete in the auto refinish world. Acrylics are not far behind in that respect.

Thanks for the info. Do you happen to know the paint codes for "classic green" and yellow.
Will the codes be the same for different manufactures?

There are several greens and yellows noted for JD in the PPG listing I have posted here. Since I am not familiar with JD color specifics, I have no idea which ones, if any, of those might be correct for you. Hopefully someone who knows will respond here or you can try asking on the JD forum for better guidance. The code numbers will definitely be different between different paint manufacturers. For example, the Martin Senour (NAPA) listing for JD colors is here. I see they have two different codes specifically listed as "classic green" and several for yellow, similar to PPG.
