Has anyone any experience with a product called "Zero Rust"? It apparently is a primer/sealer I"ve heard some use on frame rails of restored cars, etc. I"m considering trying it on the rust areas of a loader bucket I bought. I just read they have another product called "Prep-Step" that sounds alot like Picklex 20, but is only $14 per quart/$40 per gallon. Picklex 20 is $30 a pint.

Here"s what their web page says:

"Zero Rust Prep-Step adjusts the pH and phosphatizes the surface, thus forestalling flash rust. So if you have a project that has been dipped, stripped or sandblasted and you can"t get it painted for a period of time, Prep-Step powder, dissolved in water, sprayed on and allowed to dry, will give you that holding period before coating."

May be worth a try.

The link is to the Autobodystore web site. I didn't look up the prep-step you mentioned. It is likely a Picklex 20 "clone". Home Depot has another one called Rust no More, or something like that. I have a feeling (not proven), that this type product is as good as Picklex 20, for less cost. I have used Picklex and the Home Depot product, and don't see much difference in the way they work -- HOWEVER, I have not painted over the Home Depot product, but I have painted over the Picklex with no problem after 3 years. I use the Picklex products AFTER I have removed the rust, as a protectant, I do not used them as rust converters, except for tight places where I cannot remove 100% of the rust. As to the Zero Rust you first mentioned--This is not a substitute for Picklex, etc, but is a rust convertor, it comes in various colors and may be suited for your intended use, as long as you don't want a shiny finish. I look at the Zero Rust type products as something that probably will stop further rust on very heavy metals such as your loader and other farm implements. They will improve the appearance, but are not substitutes for paint. You should be able to paint over them if you wish. BUT, I'm no expert on them as all I've used is the Picklex type products.

CNKS,

Thanks for your thoughts. I am going to try Zero Rust on my loader bucket and see how it does - I hadn"t seen the Auto Body link you sent and what they had to say about Zero Rust was encouraging. I also learned recently that POR 15 contains isocyanates - I have enough to deal with using the 2K urethane catalyst.

I have to admit that the pint spray bottle of Picklex 20 I purchased is lasting longer than I thought it would, and it appears to work as advertised, but $60/quart is sure expensive. Still it"s certainly worth it if there is no alternative, and time worn experience is hard to beat. I still can"t help but wonder of some of the other products may work as well. The Zero Rust Prep-Step comes in powder form - you mix it with water. I may try some in conjunction with Zero Rust for the bucket and implements and see how it does. I"ll keep you posted.

Paul

The Home Depot product I mentioned above is called "Must For Rust".
