Hi guys,
I have painted several tractors over the years, and I am getting ready to paint my pulling tractor and would like the sheet metal to be very shiny and smooth looking. I am using ppg paint and epoxy primer
Give me some tips on what to do to the hoods to get them to have that deep glossy finish

I like to tint my primer different colors for each coat. Then, when you are blending in a dent or high spot, you can feather uniformly. You should see a few inches of each color. Also, WET SAND the primers with a sanding block!

Use PPG MTK (or better) acrylic urethane. Use a sandable surfacer over the epoxy and sand it smooth, if you have filled the dents, it will take about 3 applications of the surfacer (see below), sanded between coats, and 3 applications of the topcoat. As to the surfacer, you can put on 2 or 3 coats, letting it flash between coats, dry, then sand, repeat the whole thing at least twice more (6-9 applications, in groups of 3) or until you are satisfied. This is not too thick because you are sanding most of it off, you may see epoxy under the high spots --the idea is to get it FLAT. -- there are no other tips, from there it depends on your technique. Base coat-clear coat will give slightly more gloss, but is expensive. The more you pay for the paint, the better the results. But, an experienced painter will get better results with cheap paint than an inexperienced painter will get with expensive paint. So it's mostly technique -- that you have to figure out for yourself.

Thanks for the response. I painted several tractors and some of them come out looking like glass and I am pround that I did it, but the next one looks good, but not as good, so I knew it was me, technique is a big part of it. The local carquest is where I get my paint, I'll have to talk to them to see what kind of things they have

Its elementary my dear watson, but are you filtering the paint? Some paint will have some unmixed pigment in it and that can cause the paint to feel rough.I double filter everything right before it goes into the gun.
