Painting steps?

I am in the process of rebuilding a IH 350U and am almost ready to start painting. I have noticed some people paint with the tractor sans sheet metal but with almost everything else on the tractor. Isn't it hard to get good coverage this way or am I doing it the hard way with the tractor stripped down and painting indivdual components? This is the first time I have painted a tractor so am looking for hints to get the best looking paint job I can.

Thanks for your help in advance.

It's been my experience that the more parts you remove the better job you can do, the flip side is sometimes it's hard to reinstall some parts without scratching the new paint. I've painted enough tractors that I can look at a tractor that's been repainted and usually be able to tell how much of it they disassembled before painting. Here is a picture of our IH 706 right after I painted it, it was a very time consuming project but the results were well worth it.

You will get the best job by removing everything that will come off, then painting the chassis and the individual parts. Very time consuming, but the end product is worth it. Regardless of how good the painted-intact tractor looks at first glance, there will be many places that are simply not covered, or if the painter attempted to cover them, there will be sags and runs in that area. The quality of the finish is directly proportional to the time and effort that went into it. On your 350U, I would remove the distributer, carburator, air cleaner, governor, front axle, front wheels, rear wheels and rims, steering wheel, seat, oil pan, hydraulic controls, gas tank, radiator and shroud, fan, etc -- anything that will come off. It obviously will not be a one or two day paint job, perhaps you simply do not have the time, but the end product will be worth the effort.

Thanks for the reply, I am going to put the PTO back in, top cover on and get the paint today. Wish me luck.
