i carefully clean the tire next to the rim, with laquer thinner. If there are any of those little rubber fingers sticking up, i cut them off close with a razor blade! then i carefully mask around the rim, in close, with masking tape (3M), about 3 strips around. then laying full sheets of newspaper on the tire, i cut around the rim with a razor blade. Then i tape the edges of the newspaper, until the whole tire is covered! Makes a nice job! any small amount of overspray can be removed with laquer thinner later on. just don't wipe the new paint on the rim with laquer thinner! It will ruin yer paint! by: Rustyj

I have done all methods. It is best and sometimes faster to take the tires off and do it right. Sometimes the tires are so old that they won't survive the removal. Then you use a lot of masking tape. If you can at least break the tire from the beads to leave more room to paint the edge of the rim, it will make things a lot easier. Just spend a lot of time masking - the results will be worth it in the end.

If im not going to take the tires off I get some masking tape and tape off close to the rim as possible then use a soft cloth and wipe some brake fluid on the rest of the rubber (do not get it on the wheel), after the paint is dry you can take some thinner and just wipe off what little over spray is left along with the brake fluid. Works fine. Tires look good and black.

It"s best to take off the tires and clean and paint the inside, but if you plan on leaving them on,use vaseline or wheel bearing grease to "mask" the tire, when paint is dry wipe it off..simple.eh?? sure works better than trying to tape and paper mask it.

I found that cutting about a 4-6" wide piece of sheet metal and wrapping it around the rim right at the joint of the tire and rim does a good job of keeping paint off the tire. Length is variable depending on how big the rim is. I then drape a drop cloth over the rest of the tire to keep the overspray off. I used this method on both car and tractor tires and never got any paint on the tires.

Take off the tires, you need to clean and repaint the inside of the rims anyway.

I would also recommend removing tires. But if you choose not to, they can be masked off. It is a little time consuming though.

I am probably gonna git scolded for this but if you want to do a good job either let a pro do it or remove the tires. You can try masking but don"t know if you could get a good job.
