On this sa job, the orange primer under the top coat sure is some tough stuff. was it orange to prevent scratches from from showing much? And what effect does primer color have on the finish of the final coat? Any added depth or sheen?

Thank You,

scott#2

I will go against conventional wisdom, and say that I like the primer color to be lighter than the topcoat. A gray primer under a red topcoat allows better coverage, because I can easily see the places I miss. The primer should have no effect on the final color of the topcoat.

I reread you post. There are non-sandable primers, primer surfacers, and surfacers. I don't use primer surfacers, because I use epoxy over bare metal, and cover that with a sandable surfacer (which should NOT be applied on bare metal). The required sanding of the surfacer with 400 grit sandpaper results in a smooth finish for the topcoat, but as stated above has no effect on the final color.

The IH primer is a shade of orange and it is some tough stuff to get off. Try the wire wheel on 4" angle grinder. Primer gives the finish coat a smoother finish if it is good primer and the surface is properly prepaired.
