Got this old A.S. system, same as my friends that I used on the last resto. The a.s. gun hasnt been taken care of and needs cleaning. The pot has smoe caking and based on that I suspect the innards are about the same. Any advice about how to get this gun back in shape? I was thinking about soaking the alum parts in lye with a careful eye on them. What can I use to clean the fiber handle? Any good mailorder places you guys deal with? Thanks CNKS and DIXIELAND for the help in the last two posts.

Any other tricks to the guns I need to watch for?

Hi Scott,

I'd plan on a complete reconditioning. I suggest you first get a rebuild kit for the gun, if at all possible, that contains all new gaskets and seals. Then a complete disassembly and soaking in a spray gun reconditioning solvent that is safe for aluminum parts of guns. I don't know about any fiber handle. I mistakenly purchased some "gun cleaner" a couple of years ago that I thought was a regular gun cleaning solvent to be used after spraying. Big mistake. I found out is was actually a gun reconditioning product containing methylene chloride, a paint stripper - fairly nasty stuff. Not to be used for regular cleaning but for reconditioning a gun that has been neglected and has dried paint in the passages. Here is the product I have:

You should be able to find that or a similar product at a supplier of automotive paint supplies. I couldn't find a readily available internet link for the product.

Thanks Rod,

Im going to Duron on Monday and get a parts kit and cleaner. The handle on this on is a molded thermoplastic handle made from delrin. Its safe for most solvents but some will eat it.
