I'm in the middle of rebuilding an old Mohawk bush hog. Actually just had to make new skirts and skids for it.

Since I now have all that nice pretty metal I decided I should clean up the rest of it and put a coat of paint on it.

I started out covering it with naval jelly with poor results due to the thickness of the rust. I then started grinding through the rust with the angle head and finishing up with sanding disks on the die grinder. For the parts that are too odd shaped for the power tools I've been liberally applying the torch and burning the crap off. Then coating with naval jelly with much better results.

I'm now down to the gear box. Any suggestions on a quick way to get the bulk of the rust off before jellying it. I don't think torching it would be a good idea.

There is actually a layer of paint under the rust. Until I got to grinding the rust off I never new it was supposed to be red.
