I've tried the "lye gravy" that has been posted on here with varying results. Lately have been putting small parts in 5 gal. bucket that has a water/lye mix. Works pretty well too. Question is: what type of metals cannot be stripped this way ? Aluminum, pot metal, magnesium, etc ? Reason for asking: helper put an intake manifold from his truck in this today and in a little while the mixture was boiling, manifold too hot to touch!! Maybe I should have taken that chemistery course in school!! Thanks.

Dont use lye on anything other than steel, cast iron and some plastics and rubbers. Its a big no no on all non ferrous materials. Sounds like that manifold "was" aluminum.
