I am in the process of selecting a paint gun. I do not need a paint gun that will give an automotive finish. I am interested in a inexpensive paint gun for painting larger parts. I have found that the spray can will not put out enough paint at a fast enough rate to give a decent finish. I plan to use the paint gun for the following: paint the brush hog, paint the trailer, paint the grader blade, and paint the entrance doors to the house.... For now the paints will be an Alkyd enamel.
I have been looking at the paint guns in the harbor freight catalog, but do not know which to get. Some of them have the paint cup on top and some below. What are the advantages of each??? Any recomendations???

Out at the auto paint store where i buy my body work supplies, they have a nice regulation size spray paint gun for around $35! Now, don';t let the purists tell you those guns aren't any good! I used them for auto painting, either enamel, laquer, or base-coat-clear coat, and they do a fine job, and will be suitable for what you want to use them for! No need to go out and buy a spray gun for hundreds of dollars just to paint the things you have mentioned. Remember, it ain't the spray gun--it is the man who uses it, and his experience! Try painting some old auto parts like an old hood or fender, so you can get the feel of the gun, and learn how much to reduce the paint, etc. And, that EXPENSIVE spray gun won't do any better than that cheapie, if you don't pay attention when you are painting! Ya can't have the radio blasting rock or country or bluegrass or whatever, when you are trying to concentrate on getting the paint on the job! PAY ATTENTION!! Didn't yer teacher in school tell ya that at times? And, don't buy a Sears spray gun!! They aren't very good at atomizing the paint, unless they have improved them recently! Get the cheapie at the auto paint store! Their guns are much better than Sears! Rustyj

Look at ebay item # 4392418222. Good HVLP gun for the price and for your use. With the gravity feed style you can"t spray uphill but it will do a good job otherwise.
