How to smooth old chipped paint

I am painting a B Farmall. Not looking for a new tractor finish. However, I really hate those places where some of the old paint is stuck very well but in other places large chucks have flacked off. Is there any kind of product I can use to smooth off those areas before I put on the new coat of paint? If so, does it need to be primed first?

Thanks

you can go to home depot/lowes and get paint and decal remover, it does pretty decent, don't get any of it on your skin, it'll burn big time

Hi TKN, Whenever large chunks flake off by themselves it is usually caused by inadequate adhesion resulting from poor surface preparation by the previous painter. It also suggests the adhesion of the remaining paint that has not yet flaked is questionable even though it appears to be good. Yes, if it's down to the bare metal, it should primed. You can try to featheredge each area with sandpaper (a lot of work) to minimize show-through after the new paint is applied but if the situation is extensive, the best way is to strip the old paint completely and start over with good surface prep, a primer and color coats. I believe this is true even if you are going to brush-apply the new paint. On the other hand, if your goal is solely protection of the metal, then give everything a fair sanding, prime the bare spots and paint. It will then join the ranks of the "50 foot" paint jobs. There's absolutely nothing wrong with that if you go into it with that understanding.

Thanks for the imput.

It is really driving me nuts, so I think I will try to strip it down to the bare metal and start again. Do you have any suggestions for a chemical stripper to remove the old paint?

I think you'd get a better job that way. I've had decent luck with "Aircraft Remover" by Klean-Strip. It should be available from suppliers of autobody products.
