Hi,I have just sprayed about 3 gallons of TSC/Valspar acrylic enamel with the hardener that contains Iso's. I only used one of the white paper masks but I was outside in fresh air. I have seen a few posts that say even the good resperators will not protect you good enough and you need a fresh air supplied resporator. Needless to say I will never spray anything with Iso's again without the right equipment. Just wondering what this stuff will do to a person. Thanks

I was an auto body/ painter for at least 40 years. When the first hardeners came out, nobody told us painters about the bad effects from using hardeners! So, we went on, using the 2 filter regular paint masks. Then after the newer type paints came out, the mfgrs. sent out Safety sheets, and had seminars for us painters, about the dangers of the new types of paints, ISOS, hardeners, etc.! HAH--Too late for a bunch of us!! Well, i have been retired for 9 years from auto painting/ body work! Now, if i get anywhere near where there is any spray painting going on, i go into a big time asthma type of attack! I must get away from there quickly, to get into the fresh air, or i will surely fall down and pass out! That has happened twice--once when i visited the shop where my son works, and once near my home, at the local service station! Right across the street is an auto body shop. If they are painting, and the exhaust fan is running, i have to leave the area IMMEDIATELY, to get into the fresh air! NOT FUN!! So, save yer health and yer breathing-- get the correct equipment, before you get into the same boat i'm in! By: Rustyj

 Bad... in reply to motorhead460, 07-11-2005 00:01:16
...but don't take my word for it. Some people are affected more so than others as indicated by tommwy. You should at least become knowledgeable about the subject before taking a risk yourself. Lots of background reading at the following links:

California Dept of Health Services

Saskatchewan Labour Commission

PPG White Paper

National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health

Quebec Isocyanate Guide

Occupational Safety and Health Administration

If you don't read anything else, read this from a professional painter and the proprietor at autobodystore.com. It should make you think twice before playing russian roulette with isocyanates.

You should also read the very fine print on the can labels attached to cans of hardeners and other additives for ingredients and safety instructions. If still unsure, or want additional information, get the manufacturer's Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) for the material or additive. Those are usually available on-line for most name-brand paint products at the manufacturer's website. The MSDS will provide detailed recommendations for the safe use of the product.

A paper mask doesn't do anything but keep some of the paint particles (not fumes) out of your lungs. As to the iso's, you are now on the way to becoming sensitized to them, meaning that sooner are later you will get sick, and still later maybe die if your exposure continues (no joke). A charcoal mask is a requirement for paint without iso's. If you use hardener and you value your life use a supplied air system.

the iso"s build up in your body ,when the body reaches a treshhold level you will have athsma symptoms ,and in rare cases people have died from one single exposure in a confined area . i used to spray iso paints all the time using a charcoal mask ,i figured i had "cheated" enough and started wearing supplied air .the unusual part about it is that everyone is at a diffrent level of sensitivity . if ppg still has it they have a guide to dealing with iso . paints.

yes by all means read the warnings ,i think the risk of getting struck by lightning is greater than risk from iso"s IF supplied air is used and it is set up properly.im a certified painter ,but im no expert on iso exposure . i always thought outdoors a charcoal mask was good enough ,but it is not approved.
