I have always had some one else do the painting for me. This time i want to do the whole tractor from start to finish myself. What would be the best setup for a greenhorn. I have a small compresser what is the best meatod of getting the moister out? What type of gun would suit me the best.

I am not an expert painter. I started from ground zero, like you and will tell you what I bought, after a LOT of reading and input from others. There are MANY comparable products: 1. A HVLP Sharpe Platinum topcoat gun (refurbished, gun is no longer in production) 2. A Sharpe Cobalt primer gun. 3. Two touch-up guns.
4. A Campbell Hausfield 60 gal compressor, 15 SCFM at 100 psi. Compressor feeds thru about 100 ft of pipe with a water trap at the end of the run. 4. A Hobby Air Supplied air system to keep me from dying from isocyanate poisoning. 5. About a million sheets of various grades of sandpaper, plus various paint removal brushes for angle grinders and drills, plus a lot of other stuff. Startup costs for the guns, compressor, air system, plumbing, etc exceeded $2000. I have since added a sandblasting cabinet, and a outside use type sandblaster, plus a second compressor to get more air for sandblasting, so I don't wear my "painting" compressor out. It ain't cheap, if you want to approach doing it right, which is my goal, that I don't always meet.

From an older auto body repairman and painter: If you don't have any equipment, such as a fair sized air compressor, an air supply breathing system, a decent spray gun or two, and no first hand knowledge of body work, preparations for painting, or what paints to buy or not much else about the task at hand--i think you'd better have somebody else do the job! Either that, or get a job in an auto/ truck body repair shop, and learn all you can! After 5-10 years, you'll be well prepared to do one for yourself! And, your compressor has to put out a bunch of cubic feet per minute or more, so yer looking at a fair sized air compressor! Remember--it aint how high the compressor will pump the pressure--no-no, its cubic feet per minute (Air recovery) Write to CNKS. or some others may fill you in on what to buy, but it will probably cost as much to buy the equipment you'll need, as to have it done by a shop! And, with no experience, all it will take is 1 "goof" and yer work will have to be done over! HTH: Rustyj
