Just got another tractor Super C and the guy used rattle can sandable primer (Marten Seynor) and then used rattle can IH Red to do some of the trim parts, brkets for fuel tank, radiator mounts, etc. Can a guy lightly sand these parts and finsh spray with Urathane? He did a great job with the body work and the parts he sprayed look nice,, but would like them to be all the same type. Or do I have to remove all and start over?

Thanks

Keith, I have a fair amount of experience using urethane over enamel & have to say Rod is correct in his post about using urethane over enamel. ~There is a good chance you won't be a happy camper if the urethane lifts or cracks.
~The things I have found are: the enamel must be aged for quite a while, then light sanding with 600 or finer paper will keep the sand scratches from showing through the clear & will not let the urethane bite in too deep to react with the enamel, the use of a scotch pad to scuff will increase your chance of urethane to enamel reaction, try different types of urethane to see if one works better than the other (do this on a practice piece).
~If you do decide to try the urethane, mist the first coat on kind of dry to seal the enamel & keep the urethane to enamel reaction to a minimum or use a mid coat sealer/adhesion promoter. ( I usually just lay the first coat on kind of light & dry, then heavier for the remaining coats), let the coats of urethane flash off real good between coats to allow the solvent to leave the urethane so it isn't trapped under the flashed off top coat. ~If done carefully & handled correctly it will leave a very tough durable finish that will be show quality, if done incorrectly or with the wrong products it will be a real mess. ~One last thing, most paint suppliers don't recommend urethane over their products & for obvious reasons don't support it.

Hi Kieth,

You are correct in questioning urethane over enamel, especially spray can paint. I don't want to be non-committal but I have to say maybe and maybe not. I think the best way for you to proceed is to try a test piece somewhere with only a small amount of the urethane mixed up. Don't forget that urethanes have a pot life and have to be used right away. The next day you would be looking at jello :o). If you don't have a problem with lifting or anything, fine. If you do, then you will have to seal the old paint with a sealer or strip it. If the old paint is in good condition and there is no sign of peeling or anything, I recommend you investigate the sealers that are available to prevent such problems between coats of different compositions/manufacturers. In any event, you should lightly scuff the existing paint, by hand, with 320 grit paper or finer to promote good adhesion.

Rod
