Hi - I hope this is an easy question to answer. I'm looking for sand for my new cheap HF sandblaster. I've tried Home Depot, the local welding supply, the local metal fab shop and the local steel supply house and nobody seems to know. (Home Depot had sand but I assume I need filtered sand of some sort???) Any help or ideas would be appreciated.

Hey Jason. I am an old hot rodder and I have used sandblasting extensively in the past. I get black beauty sand from my local equipment rental place. They rent sandblasters and have the best price on their sand. Black beauty is course slag used for rough cutting. Once I have shot it outside on frames, etc., I will pick it up, seign it and use it in my sand blasting box. Basically, I sandblast before powder coating, so a very smooth surface is not that important to me. If I need to blast something for polishing, I take it next door to my neighbor who has glass media blasting material loaded up in his blasting box. It is like a fine powder that will really put a shine on aluminum or soft metal. Hope this helps. Good luck.

My local Home Depot doesn"t seem to ever have sand but Lowe"s always does. Sometimes it has gotten wet before being put on the rack and I have to go back a few weeks later when they have new dry sand. It is regular playground sand that I screen through some fiberglass window screen. I don"t bother reclaiming it since it is not that expensive.

I use white sand. Sometimes called playground sand. Some folks use the brown sand. you have to make sure it is dry! I think the white sand is sharper for blasting! There are other things used for blasting, but you need big equipment to use it. I would think the swimming pool sellers might have white sand. We always got ours from our auto paint supplier! They sold sand blasters, so-well-they had to stock white sand! Rustyj

A lumber yard or a place that sells concrete should have it -- you need fine sand. It may or may not plug your sandblasting tip, depending on how big the tip is. I generally screen mine. It gives my air compressor a chance to cool off.
