Hi Guys,

I know this is going to be a stupid question, but I need to know what are the current paint types (acrylic enamel, Imron, etc) used in tractor restoration? I've got a JD301 that I would like to repaint, but I only want to do it once. I'm going to use this tractor, it won't be a garage queen, so I want a paint that's extremely durable, easy to apply, and doesn't require me to wear a respirator. I do have a respirator but I'm guessing now-a-days there are good paints that can be sprayed without needing a respirator. Heck, all the custom car builders on TV are always spraying with just a dust mask on, so I assume there are safe paints out there. I'd rather not go the basecoat/clearcoat method in order to keep it simple, but I'm open to all suggestions. I plan to prime with POR-15, as I've had good luck with it in the past. So what type of paint is everyone using out there on working tractors that gives a durable, long lasting finish? Thanks for any help you can provide.

regards,
bob

Hi Bob,

I have to agree with CNKS. An "extremely durable", safe-to-use-w/o-a-respirator paint doesn't exist. BTW, that POR 15 that you mention is pretty nasty stuff. Even though it's not a two component product, it contains isocyanates. I have never used it, but the MSDS for it strongly indicates that a fresh air respirator be used when applying it. That means a $400 (minimum) respirator if you are serious about your respiratory safety. Of course that's a personal decision that only you can make. If you want more information on isocyanates in paint products and how to safely use paints that have them, do a search in the this forum on "isocyanates" or "isos" or "fresh air". There are many discussions and lots of informative links to authoritative sources on the safety aspects of such modern paint products.

Acrylic enamel or acrylic urethane. IMO forget the POR 15 and use the primers recommended for your topcoat, all from the same manufacturer. Remove the rust manually instead of trying to convert it. Also forget the TV shows as they are mostly BS. All paints require at least a charcoal cartridge respirator, if you use hardener you need a supplied air system. There are no safe automotive paints.
