I was unfamiliar with a spray gun I used and the paint on my fender has a slight orange peel effect. Although it is barely noticable, it doesn"t shin like the rest of the tractor (once I figured the gun out), and I"m not satisfied with the result. I used PPG paint with hardner over PPG primer. Can I wet sand the finish coat smooth and re-shoot it with out priming again? Also, some other parts turned out with too thin of a coat in some spots and some primer shows through. Now that the finish coat is cured, can I give another coat or do I have to prepare it in some way for another coat? If someone could answer these two questions, I appreciate it. Thank you.

Hi John,

As long as you used the hardener, sure you can. I wouldn't bother with the wet sanding though. I just dry sand with something like 400 grit and reshoot the color. In addition to removing any slight orange peel, you need to take the gloss off and provide a little "tooth" for adhesion of the recoat. Therefore, you need to sand in all areas that will get recoated, even if they have no peel. No need for any more primer unless you get down to bare metal. If you want to reshoot that area that is too thin, prepare the same way by sanding with 400 in all areas to be repainted and shoot away. I would reclean after sanding with a cleaning solvent such as PPG DX330 and tack rag off just prior to reshooting the color.
