I was at TSC the other day and found the tractor and impliment paint in International Harvester Red, I guess this is the same red as the late 40's Farmalls. Question is I could not find any spray paint in the IH Red that was labeled engine paint. Will their tractor/impliment pant hold up on the engine? Also if I blend a packet of enamel hardner in with a gallon of IH red paint will it give me a decent (not show quality) original looking paint job on my tin? Trans, axles, hubs? I have an inexpensive air sprayer I can use.

TSC paint is lousy paint, it will fade rapidly--I suppose you can keep it waxed. If you are unwilling to spend much more money for better paint, buy some 2150 from your Case-IH dealer, it will be much better than the TSC paint. Hardener will add gloss, but if you don't want to get poisoned, you need a supplied air system that costs about $500. DO NOT use hardener without one, even for one tractor, a charcoal mask is simply not adequate, regardless of what paint salesmen or anyone else tells you. The appearance of the paint will depend more on your skill as a painter than whether or not you use hardener. I do use hardener, but I have the proper equipment. The same paint goes on the engine as on the sheet metal, the only place it will burn off is the manifold.

Would a Dupont, or PPG give me a better paint without adding hardner? How much more expensive is the better paint? I guess what I'm asking is what would you recommend to a DO-IT yourselfer working out of his back yard that doesn't do a lot painting so therefor don't have access to the good equipment. Just looking for a fresh coat of paint to put on an old rusty Farmall to bring it back to life and restore its appearance. This is not a total restoration or show room tractor.

Case-IH 2150 is around $40-$45 a gallon I think. I haven't priced PPG Omni or DuPont Nason acrylic enamels lately, I would guess about $70, I could be off either way. You also need to use the PPG or DuPont primers, which are also more expensive. The cheapest way to go and still get a decent job that won't fade overnight is with Case-IH 2150. It is an acrylic modified alkyd enamel, probably not as good as acrylic enamel, and certainly not as good as acrylic urethane, but you probably will be satisfied. PPG also markets an acrylic modified paint, I have no info on whether it is better than the Case-IH version.
