Rod, on the Farmall Forum CNKS told me to ask you this question. What's the lowest temperature you've gone to in applying Omni MP 170 primer? Here in CT were going into temperatures with lows around 50 and highs around 60 for the next week. I'm wondering if I can use the product to get some winter corrosion protection.

Hi Dave,

I prefer to not do any automotive-type painting below about 70F. However, I think I have successfully applied epoxy primer in the 60's in the past, perhaps even the specific MP170, I'm not sure. I know I have never applied any of it below 60F. None of the tech sheets I have seen from either PPG or DuPont indicate any recommended minimum temperature for their epoxies (except NASON, which indicates 50F minimum for theirs). It is my understanding that the chemical reaction needed with the catalyst will not occur below some temperature. I am not sure what that is but recall reading somewhere that it was about 45F. My guess is you would be OK in the 50's but cannot verify it since I have never actually done it. Per CNKS's thread a little below, the MP170 tech sheet now recommends a 15 minute induction period between mixing and application. Since everything is slowed down at the lower temps, I think observing such an induction time (or even extending it) is more important than ever. I'd use at least a 30 minute induction period to be on the safe side.
