why does my paint gun spit?

I have a hvlp Finishline spray gun. In the past it has performed beautifully. The last couple of times I have painted, the gun "spits" every 2 seconds. It acts as though it is running out of paint even if the cup is full. This causes an uneven finish. The gun has been cleaned properly and I can't believe any parts would be worn due to the infrequent use that it has seen. Any suggestions as to what is wrong would be greatly appreciated.

somewhere in your gun is dried paint, or a clogged nozzle, or something you have missed! On the regular old type spray guns, the packing around the main needle would dry out, and it would "spit". a drop of oil on the needle would save the day, and not hurt the paint! It was usually put on the needle behind and outside of the front spray head, where i could see the needle moving back and forth! Also, is there a breather hole on the gun anywhere? I'm not familiar with the HVLP guns, is why i asked. RJ

See if this DeVilbiss troubleshooting guide helps. You should have gotton a copy of it with your gun.
