If you are accidently exposed to ISO'S is there anything you can do to keep it from harming your health. My friend was painting with hardner and I opened his shop door thinking he was done and got a good whiff of the paint. Do you think this one time exposure is going cause any harm to my health. I am a little worried. I didn't feel real good the next two days but I am starting to feel better. Don't know if I was truly sick from paint or just worried.

Any comments appreciated

I have been exposed to ISO's, the first 3 tractors I painted I was told the twin cartridge mask is fine, that was 6 years ago. I havnt had any problems. The guy that told me the mask is fine has been painting with ISO's for a long time hes around 60/65 years old and never used a fresh air system, I wouldnt worry about it, but when I use ISO's now I do use a fresh air system.

People react differently. I know a person that says cartridge masks are ok, "because it's what we have always used". Problem is iso's are cumulative, and you never know when you are going to feel the effects. I felt them after a single use. It simply is not worth the risk.

I guess it will probley be hard for me to know when I feel the effects, I have a autoimmune disease called Wegeners and it did attack my respiratory system in 2002, it all ways got my Kidneys before, The Iso's I have been exposed to couldnt be much worse then the side effects of the med's I have been on!

Hi,

Typical, reasonably immediate reactions to iso exposure are shortness of breath and uncontrollable coughing - not pleasant at all, and is something to avoid. There is not much you can do after the fact as far as I know as a layman (except removal to fresh air). My suggestion is to not be overly concerned unless your condition continues for more than a couple of days, in which case you should see your doctor and explain the details. This is not the forum for specific medical advice. If you seem to be sensitive to isocyanates, the best thing you can do is avoid them totally in the future. JCS provided a good link to review on the matter.

I am not a doctor. See your physician for medical advice.

Having said that, Based on the government Department of Health Services (DHS) fact sheet, I conclude that ISOs are dangerous, even for one exposure. It apparently has caused asthma and other respiratory problems. The link below is this DHS fact sheet on ISOs. From this fact sheet, I would also conclude that respiratory problems are the primary risk and that the cancer risk is minimal for short term exposures.
