I read a lot of threads about using good quality paint to get the most durable paint jobs, seems that's the way to do it. My question is this, I bought several gallons of paint from Quality Farm & Fleet when they were liquidating and I want to know if using hardener in it will help extend the life of the paint job any significant length? The paint jobs will be on implements and a tractor, none of them are "show" equip. But I want them to look decent and not fade in six months. Any comments guys?

I've spray painted equipment with the "Quality" Farm & Fleet paint, both with and without the hardener. When I used the paint without the additive I was disappointed in the durability of the product. My equipment sets outside and it lost it's shine relatively quickly. During my last projects I used the additive and they seem to be holding up better. It's only been 2½ years so far though. When you have to paint backhoes and dozers, it takes a lot of paint to cover every thing. I'd definitely recommend your using the hardener!

Isocyanate hardeners are used as an additive to synthetic, acrylic and polyurethane enamels and some primers. They chemically crosslink with the resins in the paint and produce a dry paint film that exhibits improved gloss and is more resistant to gasoline and chemicals. Isocyanates also improve UV resistance, giving paints much better gloss and color retention. If you've got no experience using hardeners I suggest you read a paper I've written recently on their safe use and handling.

Red paints in the $20 - 30 price range are notorious for fading quicker than other colors. I'm not familiar with QF&F paints and I don't know what you paid or what color it is but I would venture to say that you will more than likely do some justice in using hardener here.

If you email me directly I will forward a copy of the paper to you.
