I am on the final piece of my restoration project and I am having fits. I am painting a B Farmall. I have painted everything so far with no problems until I got to the gas tank. I will spare you all the detils of how this gas tank has tortured me and go to what is my current problem.

I am using Case IH paint and have primmed with Tractor Supply primer. After primming, I wiped down the tank with a wax/grease remover. I let that dry probably 30 to 45 minutes before I started painting. I mixed the paint with the Case IH hardner and started spraying using a pressure feed gun. I also painted my fenders at the same time.

The fenders turned out great, but the top of my gas tank cracked and wrinkled like dried mud at the bottom of a dried up stock tank! I followed the smae process I have done with all other parts on the tractor and have not had this problem until now. What am I doing wrong?

Thanks for any advice.

I would definatly use case-IH primer. I have never used the new hardner that they resently came out with. I have always painted gas tanks that are atleast part full and never had any problems. I can say from experience that the new acrylic modified IH paint is very sensitive to recoat time and the effect of film thickness on drying time. You must follow the directions to the letter. I had a problem all of a sudden on a hood, and I had done everything the same as I had previously. The only thing that was different when the paint liffted was that it was raining out side and a little cooler(70 degrees verses 80). I had been top coating to quickly, but had been getting by just fine. My lifting was made worse by the fact that in addition to top coating too fast my film was fairly heavy. It was not too thick, but was on the heavy side of acceptable. If I had a thinner paint thickness, I may have gotten by, but I am just guessing. I now follow the directions to the letter and allow the proper amount of time between coats. I have had no more problems.

I don't know the answer, and can't explain why your fenders worked and the tank didn't, unless as suggested below, you have gas fumes. But, wax and grease remover is not really designed to use over primer. I do use it that way, but I wipe it all off immediately. You do not want to let it dry on any kind of paint. I don't even let it dry on bare metal. One other thing -- if you use CIH paint, why don't you use CIH primer? At least they are compatible.

stupid question is there gas in the tank even a little bit. the vapors wil blanket the top of the tank and kill the paint.
good luck Ed

HiTKN,

I don"t have a specific answer to your problem, but you might want to review some of the possible generic reasons for it. See cracking, lifting and wrinkling.
