Paper grit for use on surfacer?

I sprayed the tin today and 1 coat of surfacer covered about 80% of the pits. I was going to sand it down and hit it again tomorrow and see how a second coat does. That nasty old grill came out looking pretty darn nice. (after alot of work and filler smeared fingers) I am wondering what grit should be used on the surfacer (between coats) and also before the topcoat? Things are really starting to come together now... about time.

Also, do you guys think its ok to topcoat in high humidity, (70% or so) and then move the pieces into a heated shop? Or should I wait until a warm dry day. The temp is dropping in Md. after tomorrow and tomorrow might be our last 50s-60s day for a while.

Thank You,

The spec sheet for MTK says 400 -- I see no reason to sand Omni MP182 will less than 320. But, I use 400 for the final prep and between coats also.

I'm curious-- regarding your "surfacer"-- what product did you use? Sounds like good stuff!

It's a PPG MP-182 and hardener (iso's). Not really meant for filling pits though, just for sanding scratches and minor imperfections. The first coat was shot thick and with a hvlp turbine system. I am really begining to like these turbine systems as the air comes out warm without any water and paint dries alot quicker allowing you to shoot heavier coats without many run problems, great for a dummy like me.

I just finished sanding down all 3 pieces, first coat of surfacer and I am surprised how well it covered some of the larger pits (just a few) that I some how missed) one more coat ought to do it. Then I just need some good weather for the top coat. (rare commodity around here now)

Thanks CNKS and Rod, wouldn't have turned out this nice without your sage advice.

use 180 or 220 between primers coats, if the topcoat is base/clear finish with P800 or american 600 grit. Humidity is no problem for modern paints, if you are using laquer you have issues, if laquer wait to paint or have heat ready to drive out the moisture
