Do you have to sand surfacer before topcoat?

The reason I ask is because when I primed all 3 pieces, tank, hood, grill, I didn't know when I would be able to get back to them. So I shot the back side of all 3 pieces with surfacer as well to avoid the scuff and re-apply thing with the MP-170. I'm not really picky about how the back sides look on these pieces, I'm more concerned about adhesion with the top coat. Any ideas?

I'd sand it (400 or finer) for the best adhesion - or use a general purpose (maroon #7447) Scotch-Brite pad on it. You won't have to reapply like the epoxy but the scratch will permit a better adhesion and with the Scotch-Brite it's real simple and easy to do. I think any paint film that has dried beyond it's normal recoat period (2-3 hrs for the 182) should be scuffed before another layer of anything. The epoxy is the only one that I am aware of that says not only to scuff but also to reapply itself after the recoat period. You did save the epoxy recoat by applying the 182 right away, which is what I would done also. It saves a step that way.
