Call it what you want, How to improve your eyesight in 10 or so quick swipes with the squeegee, the art of precision sanding or "if I did this for a living, I'd be quitting my job tomorrow to take up foam installation in small rooms. Once again I stepped back and have joined the quagmire of the rank amateur. Just when I "thought" I knew what I was doing. (never think that way) Looking at these pieces and closely examining what was left after sanding, I figuered "yep, juat one more coat of surfacer ought to do it. Then I got a brainstorm, why not fill some of those low areas with finishing putty, it might take 3 coats of surfacer to make it perfect. (nothing's ever perfect) Big mistake, that stuff sands like a brick. When I was sanding it all off, I was wishing my eyesight was that good when I hit it with filler the first time, maybe I wouldn't have spent the last 2 or so hours learning the art of "precision sanding". Boy am I glad I didn't put a whloe lot of that stuff on.

Today I learned how to sand.

You're experiencing that law of diminishing returns regarding serious rust pits. No, I wouldn't put the two part finishing putty on top of a surfacer. The two materials are quite different in their ease of sanding. On top of epoxy, fine but not surfacer. Surfacer should really be the last product down before topcoat - if you are using a surfacer. I have used some of the old lacquer spot putty over surfacer to correct some minor spots that were missed previously, but I overcoat that with a single coat of surfacer and a final sand with 400 before topcoating. The spot putty should be used sparingly but sands as easily as the surfacer.

Thanks Rod, I was just poking fun at my typical way of learning things. I filled all the pits with filler after the 170 did the finger thing and left the screen in, popsicle sticks came in handy for sanding the tops and bottoms of the cross bars. That grill really does look nice now. I probably put $70.00 and 12 hours time in it. I knew that a second coat of surfacer would have taken care of it but I just couldn't resist trying that flowable. I'll post a pic after the top coat if I ever get to paint again. Looks like were in the deep freeze for a while here.
