Question about primer use

I have an old hot rod buddy who swears that you should not primer clean metal surfaces before applying paint. He builds show cars and swears that he has never used primer on clean metal. His contention is that if you chip it, the paint will come off easier because it is adhered to the primer. If the paint were attached directly to the metal there is a much less chance of chipping. I have always used primers, but I am getting ready to paint my old Ferguson and I was going to ask him to apply the paint, since it is too cold to paint in my garage. I would appreciate hearing your responses.

Painting directly over bare metal would be like powder coating over bare metal. In a perfect climate controled world where nothing foriegn ever comes in contact with the finish it will probably adhere but if anything even microscopically scratches through the surface ,corrosion will peel it off in sheets.Powder coat is overrated also because it will do the same thing because niether one has any corrosion resistance and they don't really adhere to bare metal, they form a shell over it which will fail when broken. Over clean metal use 2 part epoxy primer first, then if any surface flaws use 2 part urethane build primer, block sand smooth with 400-600 wet paper, then another coat of epoxy for a sealer then top coat of tyour choice. Stay with one brand/system from bottom to top. See your PPG supplier and ask lots of questions.

Modern paints are intended to be used over primer. They will adhere to the primer better than they will to bare metal. The exception may be the old alkyd or synthetic enamels, which "apparantly" adhere well to bare metal -- most of the old tractors alkyd was used on did not have primer. A "show car" that travels in an enclosed trailer is not the same as a tractor. but your friend is entitled to his opinion.

Thanks for your reply. He tried to tell me that primer is used only to fill imperfections or small pits. I have tried to talk to him but his mind is made up. When I took the paint off of this old tractor, I sanded through primer on most of the parts. I have already bought the primer and metallic green paint, I am just trying to find somebody or someplace to shoot this tractor or else I am going to have to wait until spring when the temperature comes back up.
