I have a basically stock 1944 JD A. There is a local pull near here (45 min east of Charlotte, NC) in a month and a half or so. Dont want to spend BIG $$$ right now, but what would you do to this tractor for a pull? Or would you just go and watch... again?

your tractor has a fast first gear if you have stock tires (13.6-38) pull the tractor as light as you can. I have seen these tractors pull stock and they dont have enough power.1950 and up have a slow first gear and they dont chock in first gear.

Read G-Man's post above in answer tothe fellow with the B and wants to win. As long as she doesn't stall in 1st gear worry about getting the rear tires to bite, max the hitch height and get the weight balanced.

You need to hook on the sled and see if the issue is HP or traction...or maybe both. After you pull let us know which problem needs solving.

If you are referring to the pull in Oakboro- It will be stock RPM's, 1st gear, no cut tires, and I would recommend wheelie bars or you will get red flagged if the front tires comes up more than 12 inches. You should be able to pull in the 5200 and 5700lb class. LOL

find out the rules first there are so many different classes and rules that you need to know what kind of pull you are going to ie. barnyard stock, stock, modified, cut tires etc. then decide if you need to do anything at all to your tractor. after you find out the rules you can ask more specific questions..... .good luck

That's good advice! Pageland would be one starting place. Statesville (Tomlin Mills) off I77 is another (1st weekend of the month usually). North Brook up past Cherryville mid month is another. You have plenty of opportunities and it is all for the fun and a few bragging rights. You'll meet some very "interseting folks" along the way. GOOD LUCK

Just jump in feet first! I watched for a year or so before I began pulling, but I didn't learn as much in that year of watching as I did after my frist pull. As long as your tractor is running good just find a way to attach weights. You shouldn't need much more than 100# or so on the front, if any, so put most of the weight on the back.

Good luck

Matt
