WD-45 rebuild for son

I recently helped my son purchase a WD45 for pulling and grass cutting. My Dad and I have M's and have recently gotten involved in pulling events. Lot of fun and the people are great! The 45 engine is smoking and leaking oil bad out the rear main and needs to be rebuilt. Pulls around here are all low gear only events with a transfer sled. I would like to set it up to be able to compete against with M's in the 5500 or 6000# class. I understand that AC 175 pistons can be used in this engine and the AC 175 was rated at 60 hp. Is the oversize bore option better and if so, which one should I use? Any help is appreciated. Would like to get the block right the first time and possible add on other enhancements later as resources are available.

Would be great to hear from guys who have built some winning 45 pullers.

I'm not real sure if they make a true "175" overbore piston, Tisco sells the overbore but they are all the same- WD,WD45,D-17,&175. What make the horsepower from a 175 piston is the compression, these pistons are 1/4" taller than regular 45 pistons. What I've found is that they give you about 170-180 lbs. compression, so find something to seal up that head gasket well or it will seep. Trust me I found out!

Allis Puller, Thanks for the feedback. I had not heard of Tisco. Can you tell me if knock is a problem with this set up. What octane gas is required to prevent preignition and do you have a special setup (other than FM magneto) for the ignition to make it work right? On keeping the head from leaking (I trust you), is there more than starting with flat surfaces, using copper coat, and torquing head according to service manual instructions? Again, I appreciate the help.

Mine has been set up like this for 2 years, and so far the only thing thats went wrong is the head gasket seeping, and Agco Puller suggested that I use ceramic sealer from Moroso. So far it hasn't knocked. I'm not running any special ignition on mine at all. I do run Cam2 with lead additive - I heard Cam2 is hard on the valves without it. I'm very happy with performance My tractor is actually a "WD" which is higher geared than your "45" and I can run 2nd gear where ever I go. And I even pulled 3rd gear in an exibition pull - 3500#. Not bad for a 4 speed tractor.
