I'm interested in building a mild tractor for running pulls. I want to have at least 80 horse out of an Farmall M or a 400. What is the best way to get there without buying a 1000 dollar LP head. I can use 450 pistons and mill a little off the head but that is not quite enough. Will like to hear anyone's comment. Thanks

thanks Red for the comments. It wouldn't bother me to spend a 1000 dollars to make a good puller.

The good news is that 80+ hp can be had. The bad news is that it's going to cost $1000+ any way you go. Your wanting to almost double a STOCK M's hp. This requires three (mechanical) things: cubic inches, air, and fuel (I didn't mention ignition, that is part of any good set-up). The one non-mechanical thing is money. For 80+ hp I would start with a 4 1/4 bore and a 6 stroke. Yes, it can be bored and stroked MUCH bigger, but the cubic dollars increase also. A 4 1/4 x 6 engine with a good port and flow-bench job will make 80+ with the greatest of ease. Set a budget, ask questions, look for good deals. One question I have: what is your current set-up and how much hp is it making? Maybe you can do alot better with what you've got. Keep us posted. Good Luck.
