I have a G John Deere that I pull, and a few people have told me that if I take the fanshaft out of it it would give it around 5 more HP. I've seen alot with them out, and they put an electric fan on in its place. The only disadvantage I can think of would be not being able to have a generator. What is everybody's thoughts on this? What kind of battery would be the best that could stand multiple run-down and recharging cycles unlike a regular car battery? Thanks for the input.

Brandon,
I ran a 60 w/ hi-comp. pistons, a little head work, and a few other little mods with no fan one time. As far as the power, I don't know, but it does cut weight. DEFINATELY get an electric fan, and put it on a toggle switch. I didn't pull it the first time because it was getting hot in the line up!

Hope this helps, later

I too would like to see real dyno numbers. If you are looking to gain 5 hp, I'd suggest a better air filtering system, carb work, and head work. Items mention could be minimal in cost or could get expensive depending on how far you go. I noticed a significant difference when I completes the air system.

Run an alt. with a cut out switch and put the fan in front of the radiator. When pulling shut off the alt. when it gets hot( Wire in a thermostat switch) the fan will come on.

My dad did a similar thing to his racecar (360 V-8 Plymouth Duster). Of course it is a completely different animal from a tractor--but the idea does have merit. He never mentioned how much it supposedly would gain, but any little bit helps.

If this is strictly a pulling tractor, I doubt if you would ever run it long enough for it to get hot even with no fan at all, if the rest of the cooling system is left intact. Thirteen gallons of coolant and all that cast iron take a long time to heat up. I would just take it out and run it without the fan assembly and see just how long you can run it before it gets to 210 degrees or so. You might not need to bother with the electric fan at all. I would also have to see a 5 hp increase on the dyno to believe it. That would be in the neighborhood of a 15% increase in horsepower.

Tried running without fan shaft with high compression A... Heats up quicker than you would think. One run and right up to 220, cools down very slowly. I had about 225 psi @ Cr. speed, 10.5:1 on paper.

You will not gain 5 horse, it will save a little weight though. Just put the electric fan on a seperate toggle switch and turn it on when the tractor starts warming up then it is not draining all the time.

I know some guys with electric fans, they work well, they are light weight, I think the 5 hp gain is a little optomistic, I can't back that up cause I have never tried it, but sounds like alot, good idea to save weight though, I would use a deep cycle / marine starting battery, I would think , and from my experience , they are meant to get drained down hard, you can start several times and still have alot of run time before recharging it, I have done this in alot of my tractors and like the marine batterys.
