I just bought a 94 Dodge with a Cummins Diesel.
Is there any way to get more power out of it with out spending alot of $$$$? It has a K&N air filter and im going to take the converter off and put a better muffler on. Is there a chip I can get for it?

Yes.. there are a few things that you can easily do to get some HP out of your 94.. the down fall is that the P pump on your 94 is smaller than the P pumps used on the later engines.. There is a plate in the top of the injection pump that increase the rack travel.. this can be adjusted.. go to TST's web site and find the instruction for installing a plate (sometime called a torque plate) dont take the plate out, just loosen plate and slid it toward the front of the engine.. Or buy one of the plates offered by one of theses web sites.. if you go with the bigger injectors (Diamond B 370's are the most common for the 12V) and an aftermarket torque plate you will have to change the delivery valves in the little pump or go to a newer pump. I would buy a new plate to start with.. sometimes you can find the plates for less than $200... (Or you can modify the one that is in your pump.. but only have one chance.)

U MUST have guages U will need to watch the EGT's while hotroding and pulling...

One of the easiest things and cheapest things to do is give it a good tune-up. Adjust the valve lash, pull the nozzles and have them checked and adjusted (the opening pressures are likely below spec if it has many miles on it at all - you might also be able to have larger tips installed at the same time), install a new air filter (K&Ns are a little pricey, but it will be paid for after the first two or three times that you can clean it rather than replace it), change the fuel filter, install a straight pipe at least (or maybe an entire system) and see what that gets you. There are many more modifications to make, but usually little items like that can add up to a pretty good gain in performance. Also check the throttle linkage to make sure it's moving the throttle shaft wide open with the pedal to the floor. I've seen a couple that weren't going wide open, and that definitely hurts performance. You might also consider "spill-timing" the engine. The timing being off by just a degree or two can really make a difference on those "B" series Cummins engines. Spill-timing is the only really accurate way to set it properly.

I've seen huge number of 94 and 95 model years not getting wide open throttle, the fix is unhook the throttle cable and hook a small pipe wrench or a weapon of your choice over the pedel arm, bend the foot pedel arm and reatach the cable and check again, this was the normal fix at the dealer.

Dodge made that pedal that way for a reason Not to take a weapon of my choice and modify it. You might as well paint Hillbilly Deluxe on the side. Why shoemaker a good truck? Just go spend the Money!

Screw the muffler and cat, 4" pipe straight thru. TST makes a good torque plate for around $300. That should give it a little more pep. Good injectors might be a little higher and propane higher yet. There is a wealth of products and info on the net if you have the $$$.

Why don't you jump over to a ford truck forum. They are really loving the new 6.0 powerjoke. Bad ICM's..bad rocker arms (which by the way you need to pull the engine to change a rocker arm..long bolts go through the head into the 2 part block..bad turbos...makes me what to get rid of my HO cummins?!?!?

It never ceases to amaze me how people can be stupid enough to buy something brand-new when it first comes out. Every new engine has these problems and bugs (except for the Cummins, of course), and then the proud new owners get all hot and bothered when things go wrong. Granted, they did spend mucho dinero and it should be right, but field service will always find problems that the engineers' testing never will. It happens on pickups, cars, tractors and pretty much anything mechanical. I'd drive anything but a Ford, so I'm actually getting a pretty good chuckle out of hearing about problems with the new 6.0 Powerjoke. I wonder how much Ford increased the price to buy less engine. And you have to pull the engine to change a rocker arm? The newer Dodges (post '93) can be a little challenging to work on, what with the back two holes being under the firewall, but you can still get to everything fairly easily. Give me Cummins or give me death, lol.

Shoot Burns,if you want REAL power get a 6.5 Chevy like mine,it's a hoss"NOT"!My 97 dually does ok with just my G but it hurts to pull two tractors.One day when my finances get better I would like to have a Cummins.I drove a 01 3/4 ton Dodge and man at the torque.Where I work we are getting one of the new 6.0 litre Fords.I just hope it ain't a nightmare.Jack(TN).

Hey Jack! We might be coming into a 96 3/4 ton Ford with a PSD. I'll let you know if we trade for it then you can sell thatthing of yours and get an almost real truck:) Sorry but the Cummins rules here:))

What r you used to driving? My quest would be to make it run right. MOst say the cummins has plenty of power while having plenty of economy. '94 has P-pump like the super stocker boys use to run before the french pump came along. You can change the "torque plate" and get more power, 4" exhaust, different compressor housing and have 215 Hp and more torque. After that you have to install new injectors. All available on ebay, search truck parts with "cummins".

Mike, there is tons of aftermarket stuff for the cummins. here is the best place i have found. http://turbodieselregister.com/
it will get you everything your checkbook will let you. through the 97 dodges there are no chips available as the motor is not computer controlled. 98 and up there are tons of electronic gadgets for them. also there is a guy between louisville and indy that is really sharp on tuning up the 89 to 97 motors. email me and i will give you his number.

I'm a member of turbo diesel registry and I have got to say they are one of the best forums I have ever seen! They have saved me thousands of dollars just on repair cost on my 96 dodge/cummins.

Look at Link best site for the Cummins. And the best part its free! Before you turn that 12 valver up put a set of gauges on it. then turn it up. You can make some unreal power with a Cummins!

A friend of mine works for cummings and he told me that on the 5.9 in marine use that engine is built to put out up to 500 hp. Have a 01 dodge with a cummings HO 6 speed love it I'll put it up against a powersucker or maxipad any day!!!
