I just bought a JD 50 that I thought was completely original. As I scraped the grease off the engine, I noticed that the thing has a 5" power block. It is a narrow front with roll-o-matic. The rubber is very old and hard but has lots of lug left. Will this thing do any good at our local pulls? Thanks, Bryan in KS

Byran, don't let the ol' Ollie pullers intimidate you. My bored and stroked B will give em all they can handle. The thing is, Olivers were all motor on little frames. Soooo, they should win. The 77 is closer to the JD A by comparison. My B has put it's share of Ollies on the trailer, but you have to "liven" those JDs up. Do the internal work on em and they will run.

Bryan I run a 1953 model 50 in the 5000 lbs class and do very good pulling against Gs and Ms and with the six speed trans I use 1st and wide open wheel HP is only 22 but Ican utilise all my power and pull the front up at the end I bet you wont be in the bottom half of the class Sid in eastern Colo

I pulled at 50 B Stock, for 8 years and did pretty well, as long as you are pulling against stock tractors. Had ll.2 x 38 tires that were hard. and throttled back as soon as I had slippage. They made us pull in low gear only, which is 1.5 mph so more power would have did no good. Beat a few 44 massys, and some 77 olivers. Russ

Don't get your hopes up, but then again you might be pleasantly surprised. Get your draw bar as close and high as you can. What tire size and bar type are you running? post back maybe we can see more what you are working with. Later Greg H.

Greg, thanks for the reply. The tires are 13.6x38". I believe that they might even be the original tires. The bars look to be 45 degree?? It has power-trol, roll-o-matic, no 3 point. Thanks, Bryan in KS

Bryan,
The 13.6's are a common size for the B. If I had my choice I'd want a 23 deg bar, but if your tires are old and hard like you say they are, and if they are sloped back, they might bite just fine. Even with your extra cubes, I'm afraid that Power might be the problem. I hope they have a stock class for you to pull in so that you can be competitive. If it's not a stock class some of those little tractors become real fire breathers, so just keep it all in prospective. I pull a stock tractor, because I still farm with it, and I have trouble sometimes, when people bragg about how much better their tractor is, or how tuff it is to beat. I just take comfort in knowing that I can bale hay all day or disc to my hearts content, with out mechanical failure, so when there are bragging, I just grin to myself, because I know that's something the hot rods won't get away with. watch the other A's and B's where they are placing their weights, for that track, keep it in first gear, and watch for the spin out holes. good luck Greg H.

If you have a stock or "open field" class you can probably do reasonably well...especially against the Ollies who have large egos.

Bryan, Depending on the type of pull you go to will depend on the performance of the tractor. Transfer sled pulls may be a little difficult to win leaving the tractor like it is. However, in percentage pulls (If you have this type) you would probably do very well. The 50 is reasonably light and with a p-block and the good ol hard tires you could have a good chance of placing. Lots of other things like track quality, etc. etc. can depend on the performance too though. Luke
