I know you are a JD 2cyl man, Iwould like to ask you a few questions if you don't mind! I have worked on a few JDs over the years, I have had some good luck with tring to make power from them. My question is about carbs and cams. I Know that tring to get 5 more hp out of a JD is like pulling I teeth sometimes, Anyway I had a gentlemen ask me why a JD does not perform well after all the work has been done(Boring and stroking)? Says it gets in to the touque curve to soon. I could not tell you the exact specs on this JD but he has 220 psi at cranking speed. In my opinion that should be a very good deere if done right. I told him this, and this is question 1::: Is it possible to put to big of carb on a JD? I say yes, because of the vaccum pressure is very tempermental in a JD. I have a JD A that is stock bore with the head and block shaved. I tried running a big nut G carb, but lost hp. I went back to the A carb, HP rose about 2 hp. Then I tried a B carb on the A and it came to life. I picked up almost 20psi per cyl and the vaccum pressure increased by 3 in psi. I got the 5+hp I was looking for by doing this. What do you think so far? The next step I did was change the cam grind to match a 630gas. I have not put this cam in yet, but I am thinking that the grind on the 630 will help the A due to the difference in lobe separation angle lift and duration. A 630 also runs at higher rpms so the torque level in the A should rise and match a 630s torque pattern on the dyno. I belive that this is alot of the JDs are still running a camgrind close to an A instead of a newer version of the engine in the 630. I would like any info or feedback from you all! No brand bashing please!! What do you all think? ChadS

I have a 51 A with 750 CID. 340PSI compession. I found that the best carburetor is a DLTX34 with a Jerrys manifold and head. I run 5 gear in the 4500lbs. 18.4 x 38 cut Firestones.

If you think thats someting. I got an JD L running 270 lbs manifold pressure that pulls 10,000 lbs in 3rd with 30.2 38s. I don't even have to take the umbrella off to get in 10k.

I call it Deere Shmit but it all smells the same.

What a tractor!! We had an unstyled A in our club that had around 90 hp, he did not pull open classes with it, Just 4mph very, very strong JD. I agree with the head and intake combo, I have heard great things comming from Jerry's parts. It is worth the money to use his equipment!! Just goes to show that the technology is out there for an open class JD!! May I ask you how much more power did the Jerry's head and intake make? Just wondering! ChadS

I don't mind taking a guess. The g carb changed the velocity thru the venturi because of the cubes, valves, runner size couldn't produce enough vacume to make the carb work.

Yep, thats what happened. Thats why the smaller carb helped, I belive it sped up the air/fuel mixture. I would say that the air/fuel mixture improvrd due to the vaccum pressure increase. I can't wait to change the cam to see what happens. I hope this works!

Chads; I tried a big nut carb that has been worked on on my "A". I found no increase in HP at all, but it did seem to hurt the pull down a little. I went back to the "71" carb for my "A". I find it interesting what you found with "B" carb. I would like to talk to you about timing sometime when the time is right.

I can say this, When I put on the B carb with the proper modifications, it got 5 more hp at 540 and 5-7 more hp on the pull down. I belive that the air fuel mixture quality improved dramaticly, due to the increase of vaccum in the engine. I don't know if it would help your A, without tring it out. You may be surprized with the outcome!
