find a 262 buda it works the best it is the same as a d19 or combine it makes around 70hp with little or no work.

Does the 40 have the 274??? Buda engine??? The crank out of a 262 will fit and give you a little longer stroke... (.250) have to shorten the pistons (.125).. If I remember correct the 274 has cast cylinders.. the 230's (WD45's) and the 262's ( D17's, D19, and some combines) were wet sleeved... Not sure which pump is on the 40.. but I would look for the pump off the D17 or D19 (or the engine.) I just don't like the power cell system.. wish there was was a different head that could be used.. We have not gotten the HP we would like out of our WD45D.... Good Luck..

The 40 had the 230 engine...it was sleeved. The 50 had the 273, which was not sleeved. Crank from a D-19 gas or diesel will fit and give you 1/4" longer stroke. You'll have to use the cam from the d-19 or knotch the one you've got for the crank to clear. A 230/273 with D-19 crank, good compression, and big enough carb to feed it will give you 80+ horse. A D-19 motor will fit a 40/50 with a little work. You'll have to put the back plate and flywheel off the 40/50 motor onto it and make a front motor mount. Stock D-19 motor (262 c.i.) makes about 71 horse. Propane pistons will push this up to 90+ horse with the right carb. Propane pistons are hard to come by though.
Those are the easy things. You could bore and stroke the 230, 273, or 262 out to about the same size and horsepower if you really wanted to spend some $$$.

Ok.. I missed it by one CID... I was thinking Diesel... Had no idea which engine was in the 40... The 262 parts will fit in the 230 if you have to have the correct block.. but it takes some machine work on the sleeves for the o-rings.. and Yes.. a little work on the cam...
And like you said.. nothing is cheap on these engines... JDGnut
