My son and I have been pulling a IH 400 in our local farm stock pulls for 2-3 years. We really don't have much for rules, 1st gear only, no cut tires, 16.9x38 for biggest tires allowed. We mounted our stock drawbar from the front of the axles and mounted some turnbuckles (instead of the rod arms) for quick hitch height adjustment (it irritated me when some guy is on the scale for 5 min putting washers under the arms while there are 6 tractors lined up waiting for the scale). We also moved the battery to the front weight brackets. We have been pulling this setup all year. Had one guy complain about the hitch during the year, he thought that we had cut the drawbar (completely stock, just mounted differently).

Went to a pull last Saturday put on by guy that we had pulled with at about 6 pulls (20-25 hooks) this year, probably that many pulls for the last 3 years. As the tractor in front of my son,(who was on deck, next to pull) was hooking to sled, the guy, who was operating the sled, told my son that he had gotten some complaints about our tractor/hitch and that we would have to change it, but (my son understood him to say) we could pull today (last Sat) with it. My son then pulled, went 17' past the tractor that was in first place, ( and the one who they let win the class), they announce the footage and then announce that he was DQed! I thought that he had a weight drop off or something like that, but that wasn't the case. Talked to the sled operator/promoter and was informed that he had 3-4 compalints about our hitch and battery and that was the reason for the DQ, said that he forgot to call or send a letter to me, also forgot to talk to me before the pull started, so this was the way he took care of it!! At least he gave the money for the hook back!!

Called him a couple of days later, and he apoligized for not calling me before the pull to give us a chance to change the hitch if we wanted to keep pulling in that class. Still, it makes us look like some cheating b@#$%^ds!!!!! I guess we have been winning to much this summer. If you can't beat someone, BPM and maybe you can get them DQed!!!!! !!!!! !!

Thanks for bearing with me while I vented.

I pull Case tractors Vai 2500 300case 3500lbs, Dc 4000lbs 600 case 8000-12000 lbs.I have some pretty tough competition down here in Va. We had a night pull in axton Va. the 8000lbs class came up. i was pulling against a 560 Int, oliver ,G JD,and a couple M's. Everybody pull ahead of me , all those tractors pulled within a foot of a full pull, so i had my work cut out! I put the screamming eagle in second gear, what a ride up to that last foot. Both tires trying to spin off the back with me ridding the brakes hard . She foated that last foot a half inch at a time Full Pull. You should have seen the jaws drop!Thats how i like to win. Mike

I don't have any 1" stories..but I do have one of a good pull. We had a JD A early styled (5.545x7.25" motor) and it dynoed 55 horse. We pulled an all nighter to get the tractor running after we figured what was wrong in the govorner. we went in and got maybe 3 hours of sleep and went to evart. The first pull was the 4500# and my friend got stuck first ever to pull it on dirt..lol.. he started and got half way down the track and started fludding out. he ended up in 2nd place and got beat the last puller of the class. I pulled in the 5500,killed it, and won it almost a full pull, not quite. and my dad won it in the 6500 and killed it. that night, we took that A to another pull and went home for a couple more hours of sleep and then took up our G (stock w/.090 and flat head). we got there, and started it...and water started to pour in and sand. someone had put it in the tractor that night or morning...and my friend pulled it again, and blew the head gasket when it spuddered. spent the rest of the pull gettin it runnin, and went up for the 2nd night at evart, got 2 1st....1 int he 5000, and another in the 6000, and a 4th in the 7000. I figured it was a pretty good 2 days other then the troubles..lol...do you have any to share??

That was a great story. I was down in Hartford, Kentucky, back in 1999 for the first ever, USAP championship. We had been to all the previos NATPA events at Hartford, I've been to every pull John Lampkin put on there, just loved the hospitality. Any way it was held over thanksgiving weekend, Our entire family went down to hartford to the pull, Over 25 of us. I was in the 3500 classes, won both of those, by a blowout. Then I entered the 4000 modified stock. I think there was 43 tractors in that class. the class wound up in a 3 way pull off. between Tracy Thompsons WD ALLIS, Cosmo Youngs WD allis, and me, with Something Wilder. The first pull was tracy, he went 100ft. then it was cosmo, he pulled it 104.25 then I pulled. I put it up in 4th gear, and idled it down to the speed limit/halftrack post, and turn Something wilder loose, The announcer came over the loud speaker and told the crowd that I won with a distance of 104.41. That was a great day for me and our family tradition. I won 3 classes, and placed 4th in another. January rolls around and the 2000 issue of the hook arrives, I open to the article for Hartford, and there I am!!! My picture, and a very well written article about me and my family. I turned to the next page and my older sister's picute was also in the hook, She celebrated her birthday by placing 2nd in the 3500 modified stock class with our 50 H. That is one of my Highlights.
