I have been trying all summer to find 5 more HP. I went from a mag to a dist. with hot coil (I was really disappointed that the Dist. did not help). I have tried different plugs and gaps. I have adjusted the carb and timing. I have tried different fuels 93 seems to work the best. All of this was done on dyno. I do not know what to do with out go inside the motor. 49 JD "A" bored .125, head milled .250 (to the eye brows), some porting done on head and intake, 71 carb (I get plenty of gas I think anyway I can make it smoke under load and for the power I back the fuel off a little), 146 psi at the plug. This tractor dynos all day long every day at 41 hp and pulls down to 46 hp. It pulls consistent 3 to 7 place, but I just can not seem to get any more out of her. I am open to any and all suggestions. THANKS(";")BUDD

I have about the same configuration as you-except my A is a 47...Have the high first gear---about the only differnce is i only went .040 off the block and .010 of the head, with the decking---I dynoed it with 87 octain fuel it ran 36hp.@540 pilled down to39hp max...with the 94octain fule i gained 2hp.at both ends----I am taking it apart this winter to change the camshaft(compition grind)and pick up a DLTX51 carb.to get more air/fuel into the engine---I think i could pick up the extra 5hp with just the carb.right now....

Changing rocker arm ratio is an option and then adjust the valves. A little extra lash on the exhaust may help the low end torque some.

If you had a spare intake runner you could open it up a little, tapering down to the blocks original size but it needs to be done on a manifold that is a cheap spare unless you have someone that understands flow and boundry layer principles. Never having had my hands on a JD I can't really make any valid suggestions. Good luck.

dear jd puller first put a high torque cam many of them available you find what you can then contact me second need more compression than 147 need to be between 180 and 200 cam will give you at least 10 lb if not more also timing advancement will help after installing a cam you want more compression buy pistons that are custom made instead of weaking castings most people cut head the block this leading a tractor that is in two pieces but after cam and time air flowing carb head intake maybe even a k and n filter but fuel will help too but must have high enough ratio to run higher fuels your at the edge of turbo blue but not enough yet

The fuel you are running is making as much power to it's potential. Change fuels again, and use the dyno to tune in the carb. You will have to rejet the carb to match your engines potential power. A better fuel with the proper carb modifications, and dyno tunning it will get you the extra power you are looking for. You may look at the tires as well. A better set of tires will hook it up better and watch your weight in the class you pull in, in percentage pulling, the tractor weight is the changing denominator when figuring your percent. Let me give you an example, Our clubs' percentage formula is 83Xinches + 3260, divided by the tractor weight. And that is the percentage you pulled. A lighter tractor, with the proper set up, will beat a heavier tractor that pulls it farther down the track, in a percentage pull. Look at where the heavy tractors are stopping on the track, see what they weigh, and weight your tractor lighter, A lighter tractor does not have to pull the sled as far to build percent,as the heavy tractors in the class have to take it down town to have a good percent. Just figure different weights with the formula and watch the percentages go up as the tractors get lighter. Horsepower may not be the answer sometimes, a good stratagy, could get you that first place over DCTOM. HA HA, Hope this helps a bit. ChadS

Spark plugs and excessive octane do not "make" horsepower, they are tools to use in case of an adjustment needed. Look at the mechanical aspects of your tractor first. Only when everything is runnung 100% do you start to "fine tune" with plug temps and octane changes...Just my 2 cents of course...770.

try a wider plug gap, wider point gap, advance the timing a little and index the spark plugs. a higher octane will help, i'd try a 93 octane and use a good octane booster. i did this on a dc case once bear in mind i could crank it like a wind up toy due to it's low compression and still made 45 hp on a dyno.

Try setting a Number-2 Powerblock in your tractor bored to 6 1/8" with aluminum high compression pistons with the setup you have and you'll make 55hp (on the dyno) all day long. I have this setup in a 47 JD-A and it run very well in 4500# - 6000# classes. It may cost you some money but you'll be glad you did.

Budd putt a pulley and the first reduction gear out of a late A with the 6 speed transmisson it will slow it down about a 1/4 mile per hr.and put more torque to the wheels

I suppose you have reduced any air inlet restriction.....Lighter oil, or even NO oil.... removed as much gauze as you want from the air filter (oil bath)... Have you checked the dist advance rate.??
This is as important as setting the timing..!! Tuned the exhaust to a "Best" RPM... Major re-work on the valve shapes, and port bowl contoured out to the seat area would help at higher rpms, but not at "Best Torque" rpm...(usually).. You could even try different cam timing... While on the dyno, did ya try different valve lash settings...?? At Least, you should have a multi-angle valve job...with the seat area no larger than absolutely necessary....with the valve seating face similarly shaped... Some increase in valve spring seat pressure could also help... If the tuning is good, you should get best HP at near rated RPM, and as RPM drops to "Best Torque RPM" you get your best power, but it should not read "Best Horsepower", it is "Best Torque"--or where the volumetric efficiency is best. Horse power does not turn the wheels, Torque does.....!! More air IN and More air OUT==More Power.!! The more air it can breath, the higher the Best Torque RPM will be...!! I think I would check the distributor first...!!

DCTOM is right, you have a very strong A. and it is competitive. Maybe try a few different ideas when pulling percentage. Try a different set of tires, A good set of road worn Firestones 15.5X38, instead of the older tires you have on there now, don't get me wrong, they are working, but they maybe just not right for the power you do have. You found out two things here: 1. Hotter spark does not beget more HP. It only helps when you already have a sub-standard ignition system. 2. Higher octane does not make more HP. Octane is merely a figure of how fast the fuel burns - it says nothing about how much energy you get in a gallon of gasoline. You use higher octane to stop engine knocking - and I doubt that was a problem. I see many people using Gasahol because of the higher octane. That stuff actually has less energy per gallon, the the mileage tests have proven that you don't get as much from it. Some here will argue with me on this, but in controlled tests, you simply don't get as much power, despite the higher octane.

The best you can do with this tractor is to possibly bore the engine and shave the head. But once doing this, why not shoot for 20 more HP? It will cost you little extra at this point.

Continuing what Doug said regarding octane, you may actually gain some power by lowering the octane and running it a little richer. You'll have more, and faster burning, fuel per combustion cycle. FYI, diesel fuel has more "power" (BTU's) per gallon than gasoline.
