what distance works the best from top of piston to the deck of block? 1 inch 7/8 or less building one just wanted to know thanks bill

That is going to depend on what compression you want, style of piston and which head you decide to use.. JDGnut

BILL..figure what compression you want..say 8:1 then subtract 1 from that number this gives you 7..divide this number into the inch stroke you have..for a g is 7..that give you 1 inch between the head and piston with the head gasket..this assumes both the piston and head are flat..lynn

My distances won't do you any good unless you stroke is the same.. and your pistons are the same.. My pistons are not flat on the top.. cut for the spark plugs on one side... other tractor has a modified Stock head... I usually do the best figuring I can to get the compression I want.. and then stand the crank case up.. (with the pistons point up.) Put the crank and one piston and rod in with no rings on... I grease the sides of the crank case and roll it to TDC and then fill the top of the piston and cylinder with fuild.. (measuring it as I put it in.) Then add for the head gasket... JDGnut

mine is 9 3/8 stroke with piston at tdc i have 1 1/4 inch to top of block the pistons are domed is that good or should it be closer?like 7/8 or so
