Steel head gaskets

Have a question for you all,,, I have seen a set of steel head gaskets for a Small chevy a while back,, Could a steel gasket be used in place of a copper one,,, If so, I could make them a whole lot cheaper,, What do you guys think? any info woould be great,, Thanks,, ChadS

Chad, in a case like this, I'd take a tip from the racers out there...and most serious racers that I've seen prefer what the HotRod magazines refer to as the "dead-soft" copper head gaskets. Steel gaskets are usually press-formed, and unless you had the press dies it'd be hard, in my opinion, to achieve consistent quality in steel. But that's just my opinion.

You can get away with murder on a small block chevy, those were used factory but they are like the man below said they are not soft enough to form theirselves aluminum is cheaper than the copper and will hold up in most situations.

The gaskets your are refering to are stamped out in a big press. The fire rings are formed in the gasket. Would be hard to make without a form die and big press. Just my 2.5 cents worth
