Can anyone tell me how much I need to take off the head or block to gain 30 lbs compression on a 5 5/8" bore with a 6 3/4" stroke? I need to clean the block up and I would like to gain this much compression in doing this.

Thanks for all input BUDD ('';'')

If raising compression losses lug, how come a diesel lugs so well! The reasoning behind your theary does't add up. If you are losing lug, you are using the wrong fuel! Or engine not set up properly! Ben there done that

HOW'S GOING !~!!!!
LONG STORY !!!!! MACHINE SHOP TOLD ME THAT TAKING MATERIAL OFF THE HEAD DOES NOT INCREASE COMPRESSIONTHAT MUCH !!!! BEEN DOIN THE MATH, I TOOK 40THDS OFF THE HEAD ON MY M LOWERED THE CC'S FROM 190 TO 180 5%OK WHAT IS THE CC'S THAT YOU HAVE FROM BORE & STROKE DIVIDED IN THE CC'S OF THE COMBUSTION CHAMBER !!!! COULD YOU INSTEAD OFFSET THE PISTON HEIGTH !~!! I DON'T KNOW. WHAT IS YOUR COMPRESSION RATIO NOW !!! WHEN YOU INCREASE COMPRESSION IT DOES INCREASE HP, BUT THEN YOU HAVE TO SACRIFICE LUG !!!!! SO YOU HAVE TO LIVE ON THE TOP END OF RPM'S . WHICH IS OKAY !!! WE ARE BURNING NEW FUEL, I HAVE LEARNED WITH A LOW COMPRESSION MOTOR HOT GAS DOES NOT WORK, SO YOU HAVE TO PLAY THE FUEL GAME !!!!!
I DON'T KNOW IF I HELPING BUT COMPRESSION HELPS GREATELY !!!! SEE YAAA !!!

BUDD..i'll have to assume some things here..looks like an a with .125 over high compression pistons..this gives you around 6.5:1..maybe some less..you will have to go to around 7.75:1 to gain 30 lbs..means you will have to remove .227 inch from block and head..i don't know if you can remove this much from them..if this is a 40 to 47 you can change to a 48 to 52 a head and they are .200 shorter..with a little milling you can get there very easy..lynn

Lynn;

You are correct on the .125 over aluminum A. It is a 49 with the late style head that I aready took .250 off last year. I will need to check, I am not sure I can remove another 1/4" off the block. Thank you so much as you did give me the info that I need. BIG HELP

THANKS BUDD ('';'')

Milling heads and blocks down to gain compression is not the best way.All you may do is junk out parts and give yourself a problem down the road,,to raise compression you need to change piston hight,stroke,cam and the like.

The bore and stroke says John Deere G? If it is you might check and see if there is room for square stock rolled into rings and secured just under the head with set screws.
