Roosamaster pump on 1206

Quick question for you guys-I am getting the pump and injectors rebuilt on my 1206 in about a month. When I talked to the guy at the shop that is doing it he said he will turn the pump up on the bench for me-but he said just tell me what percent you want to go.

How do I know by percent? He said 10%, 15% or 20% is normal. I want some more power out of it and don't care how much fuel it goes through. Any idea what I should tell him? Anybody done this before?

I was thinking 25%. Too much or not enough? I am staying with stock injectors-he said my pump can't put out enough to justify bigger injectors. I would like it to be a little competitive at the pulls.

Thanks.

If you don't want to spend a lot of cash, get a head and rotor from a DC series Roosa off a 220 Allis, then get a pump drive shaft from the 1456, they ran a DC as well, but the AC had bigger plungers. These are a 4 roller pump, instead of 2, you can push these pretty hard. Last one I set up was for a 1256. The pump has to come apart, and you need to do some adjusting inside. I cut the retainer lip of the leaf spring on the long plunger side, (there is 2 short plungers, and 2 long plungers) this allows these to max out on fuel, but you have to crank the transfer pump pressure up when you do it, run it around 160 lbs at hight rpm. The one I did runs up to 3500 rpms, pulled all season, never had a problem, pulled 2 and 3 high range in the 9000 and 11000 class. Hope this gives you some ideas. Good luck, may the horses run with you!!

Thanks for the help and the idea. I would have to go with bigger lines and injectors for that set up right? I don't know how hard I want to push the 361, plus I pull farm stock with it. I will print your suggestion out though-never know with me, I might go with that setup.

No, you can still run the stock lines and injectors, this will take you to about as much fuel as you will flow through the stock settup, (providing your pump is in good shape. If you want some other tips that might help you out, leave your email, I'll send some ideas your way. Good Luck,, The Swami

There are different leaf springs too , I think a 1206 would use the same springs as a 4020 does , at least my buddy's does . Numbers are 7-0 , 7-1, 7-2 , 7-3 . There are also some special springs too . The higher the number the wilder the spring (the more it lets the rollers out or wider the setting) I don't know the standard # for a 1206 but a 4020 is 7-0 . I use a 7-3 with .370 head . Leaf spring screw is all the way in (tight) then I use the "smoke screw" to control the power when I want to get it down for farming . I can go from 120 to around 220-230hp with that adjustment . He has a .390 head on his 1206 , but still has stock lines and injectors . I believe he can get as high as 250hp. Our max rpm is 3000 for our pulls .

If I stay with standard leaf spring just turn that screw all the way in, do you think I could get it to the 160 hp area? It's around 115 with a shot pump right now and I don't think the turbo is much better.

Plus can you explain to me which screw on pump is which-smoke and leaf spring screws. Plus which way to turn them. Seems like a dumb question but I haven't worked with injector pumps much.

Thanks for any help.

Max the leaf spring out? Is that just going to push as much fuel as possible through that pump? I am trying to learn more about these pumps so thanks for the info.

Thanks.

That is another problem I have at the moment-it has the stock solar on it right now. I have been told to go to the 3LM466 with the JD exhuast housing to get the boost to the 361. I don't know if I want to push the motor that hard-what would be a good replacement for the solar? Or should I get that rebuilt if I can?

Another question-if I have him max the leaf springs out, am I able to adjust the smoke screw to turn her back down some?

Thanks for your help.
