Smoker H...keep those ideas comin'!

After my last post, I guess you kinda figured out I've got a little bit of a reputation as an instigator...somebody that gets stuff started. I just wanted to hear what some of you more experienced folks (in pulling) had to say about the "Smoker H" idea...and I'm really encouraged!

As far as setting up a class or whatever...I know by the posts I've seen that there are a lot of pullers who are less than satisfied with the classes/rules of some of the pulling associations. So maybe THIS is where you can set some of this "right." Some of you folks who are building some of these "outlaw" antique tractors...just might consider...forming something like an Outlaw Antique Tractor Pulling Association (OATPA). I suggest the FIRST rule is...non-stock engines ONLY (that's only obvious).

From there, you can set up your weight classes, rpm/mph limits, naturally aspirated/turbo class breaks, etc...and then, maybe in association with one of the established clubs, have a "demonstration" pull, just to see what kind of turnout you'd get (pullers AND spectators). I'd be willing to bet that an "outlaw" association, pulling antique tractors (tractor age limits to be determined by the group) would fill some stands...because lots of old (and young) farm boys could see themselves building something just like what they're watching pull!

SO...now tell me why it WON'T work...or why it will.

RCATPA in Tn has an outlaw class. About the only rules are no turbos. There are unwritten rules also like no alcohol. Another un written rule is no down draft carbs but no body fusses much about that one. There is a lot of frendly competition in this class and a whole lot of fun. Then you get into figuring out to go with RPMs or Cubic inches or a mixture of both. You also get to rag all the little secret squirrels that won't raise the side shields and you hear a lot of rumors about what is coming out next year..... ...

We set up the rules for our new "repowered" class so anything that couldn't be put in the tradtional classes could pull. The intentions are to use this class for everything from 560s with Turbos to V8 hot rods until there is enough interest to split the class.
A buddy has a 560 that he pulls against some the EITPA tractors in 8500#. We were once talking about starting a new association that would be based on the EITPA rules but run 5500-7500# classes for this type of tractor.

In our local 4h fair, in july,, they have classes that go down to 4500 and see alot of turbo 88 olivers, Maybe they would be interested in hosting a pull like this. If you build them, they will come!!! LOL I would be very very interested in a class like this, or help to get one going. To take it one step further, I would have an alcohol class as well, but only 1 charger, You are not an instigator!! Think of how many people read this, and now may go build one!! Just need a place to pull, and some rules that every one can live with,, Buzzman,, this could really be something!! A new club!! Chad

You all would be in a world of hurt if I could EVER, EVER figure out how to mount that 691 Cu. in. International TD 18 dozer diesel in an M chassis! Of course it would weigh what the tractor would.....

Over at Red Power Mag there was a picture of a TD 18 engine in a WD 40. I will try and find the pic for you. Later, FD

here's another one. I hope he doesn't mind me posting them here, but it's such a nice looking tractor. I have an IH Red Diamond 450 truck engine that I have been thinking about putting into something, maybe an M...one of these days. FD

Heven't decided that yet, Chad...no matter which way, I won't be legal in our pulling organization, must be stock block and tranny as per tinwork. It would only be for fun, which is considered a "demonstration pull" They DQ'd my neighbor after he beat all of us in antique class because they promptly went to the books and realised that a stock WD9 is more than 55 HP, which is their new rule, (which came about when I joined with my 60 HP Super M). AARRGGHH!! Them poor Massey and JD boys!! boo friggin hoo! (gee, I'm not bitter?) Then the next year I brought out a perfectly weight-wise balanced 40 HP Farmall 300, kicked butt, and they went over it with a fine toothed comb!! "Straight stock, boys, like it or leave it!" .....sorry for the rant there, but politics in a club really bug me! I still say that this is supposed to be fun, and the crowd don't really care if we're 5 horse over the limit- they wanna see a show, and I wanna put one on, darnit!! If we have a pull in my town again, if it runs I'll pull it!! Exhibision or not, I'm gonna have fun!! (I'm still ranting) Anyhoo, It would be nice to put the "Big Six" in a W6, but a Super 6, or a bigger Farmall would be easier to lengthen the frame in. (Check my recent post on "smoker H" to see a nice I-6 conversion). I even have a "Super Red Diamond 501", but I need that for my '52 L-190 truck to haul all my stuff around. I enjoy all your knowlegabe posts, Chad, and keep up the good work!! Regards, FD

Thanks,, I hear ya on the politics thing,, one thing I belive, is that there is no such thing as a stock tractor anymore. That RD in the M would not be hard,, instead of lengthening the frame rails, use a M bell housing, and 560 frame rails, would not have to cut and weld, Chad
