I just bought an 806 rolling chassis but with no engine. I was thinking about either puttin the german back in her, or maybe tradin up to somethin a little more parts friendly.

What is everyone's thoughts on this, who did this before?

Also missing PTO.

Just depends on what you want to do, Diesel or gas. The economical way is to find a combine engine, 715, had 301 gas, and a diesel, you can find a 358 german, they are a good choice, or a 407 those will go in the tractor wil little mods, the bigger engines can be put in, but alot of work to do, but can be done, Look around for a combine engine, they are higher rpm, and stronger than the tractor engines. Just my opinion, ChadS

Just move to a cummins. Parts are available. May be a little pricey, but you would have a solid engine w/ waranty if you put new in.

If I remember the stories back in the day the rear ends on the 706-806 was far from "bullet proof" what kind of horse is this thing gonna be able to handle. I wnat to run it on the farm. So I want it to last

we had turboed 806s running around 175hp with no rear trouble, those were heavy tillage tractors.the 806 has the same rear that a 1066 has, bull gears and diff. will interchange same with tranny gear clusters.i have a 856 rear in a pulling tractor that gets around 1000 hp run through it.

The german belongs in the 706, and I would never put one of them in for a pulling tractor or a farm tractor. We have one in our 756 anbd it is nothing but trouble, but others we've talked to say theirs are excellent - maybe we got a bad one.

The 361 or 407 are akay and you can make power out of them - just not as many readily available parts for them - got to be more creative on your own. 414, 436, 466 would all bolt right in if you have back and front plates and make the clutch match up, but the hood may need to be a bit longer if I remember correctly. Side rails too. Radiator and shroud work as well as throttle linkage would all be some of the other stuff that will drive you nuts trying to get to work. If for farming, air filter is also a headache to try to fit in there. Neighbor put a 466 under his 706 and used the top hood off of a 560 instead of lengthening the original - aparently the 560 hood is longer than the 706.

The 826 has a german diesel 358 very strong engine only problem with them the cylinder sleeve o-rings go bad and antifreeze gets in the oil. We have 2 826's both happened around 3000 hrs.

Believe I read a few days back where ChadS said something about puttin' a DT466 in one of these...believe he said something about having to use an 826 radiator and 66-series side rails, if I remember correctly.

But you might ask HIM, in case I don't have the details straight.

Like Shultz said, the later 706's had the German diesel, but NEVER did an 806 have anything but the bulletproof D-361 Diesel, or a C-301 gasser. If you want to farm with it, why not get a good running engine? Those tractors gave thousands upon thousands of hours of reliable service, and most are still earning their keep today. Regards, FD
