We have a JD Late A with a mag on it and.090 pistons in it, and some head work that we run 94 in. Both of the dyno's we have had it on say it had say 51hp at first at 540, then it drops down to 46hp constant for baout a minute, then it jsut starts cutting out and quits even after you relieve the dyno pressure. I know it ain't setting up because the pistons were loose when we tore it down, and didn't have the money to put new rings or pistons or have it bored. I can't figure out why it is cutting out. , and a 71 carb. I can't figure it out.....thanks in advance to anyone who may be able to shed some light on this problem

If it still has this problem after the plug change check the hole in the well on the bottom of the carb neck that goes into the bowl.My G had a hole on the neck that was stopped up just enough that under a full load it didn't get quite enough fuel.May not be what your problem is but it was mine.Hope this helps.

Our A did the same thing.Tried new wires, mag, carb, lines, still had same problem.Called Champion tech line. They said to go with a shorter, colder plug with a fatter ground strap. The ground strap was getting red hot and causing pre-ignition.Changed plugs and haven't a lick of trouble since.Same plugs have been in tractor for over 5 years now.Too cold to go outside now and get plug # tinight. If you'd like,I can check tomarrow.Good luck

a puller..if the mag is not the problem check the spark plugs..had the same problem with an unstyled b with 200 psi and using w-18 plugs..on dyno it would just die but wasn't seizing up..plugs were getting so hot they must have been building up high resistance and wouldn't fire..went to adapters and auto plugs to get the right heat range and never had another problem..lynn

It's your Mag thats causing the trouble, when they get old and wore they miss sputter and stumble,,,the condition you discribed here tells me this,,,,switch to a battery ignition

ya, I have thought that it is the mag, but I don't know for sure. the only reason I don't switch is because it is hand start right now to stay light for cement pulling.....it could be, where could I get a good mag that wouldn't do that, or do they all do that?? thanks alot for the post and info....apuller

You can post on the JD site here to find one, but, mags are noted for just what I discribed to you,and maybe you will get a good one and it might last for how long?,,,switch to the battery ignition and use a lawn mower battery or motor cycle battery, just charg up before pull, this will keep weight down,,,if ya like have a couple of batterys and switch them when you think battery is getting down,,"hope I gave you some ideas"

Check fuel flow. Is it leaning out a little or running out of fuel? Is it getting hot and detonationing/knocking until it cools down again?

The tractor has a water pump like a 60, so I don't belive its getting too hot, and when it does its sputtering and cutting out until it quits, it puffs out alot of black smoke, no matter where the carb is set....it boggles my mind!! thanks for the post

It does sound like you are running out of fuel,, it could be the mag coil being weak, if it was ignition, it would pop through the carb, and the exhuast. If this is a engine just put together, redo the valve lash, you may have a valve too tight, you should be able to back the fuel adjustment out and make it really run rich, if it does not, the carb may be plugged up in the main housing in the jet, or the jets need to be bored out. Check your float level, valve lash, and spark plug color. if the plugs are whitish, it is lean, if it is a bit black, it may be trying to run off the idle circuit, due to a plugged main jet. If those don't help, then look at the mag, or vice versa, Just my opinion, Chad

There is a photo of the 460H in the tractor photos. Here is what I would check,, get a compression guage, and make sure you have the valves set with peak cyl pressure, or at least close to each other. I set my lash with the compression guage, I will find peak pressure by adjustng valve lash at stock setting, then I tighten the lash, and recheck the compression. When the pressure drops, it is too tight. I find 10-20 extra psi in the cyl pressure, every time, makes a difference!! It is time consuming, but worth it. Fine tuning, makes HP!!! ChadS
