Expanded metal is just like raised diamond plate sheeting with the diamonds cut out and is used for traction on walk ways and loading ramps. It comes in different thickness,go to a metal fab shop and they should have some scraps. get the thinest so you can push it into the pipe and it will stay there if you cut the same or slightly bigger than the ID of your pipe.Hope I didnt really confuse you.

So i bend the expanded metal into a tube form similar to the chrome pipe? and then stuff coarse steel wool between the inside of the pipe and the outside of the expanded tube structure?

I believe he means make it like a sandwhich, the steel wool being the meat, and the 2 chuncks of steel being the bread. make it just a few thousandths bigger then the pipe..or you can just spot weld the steel in there..and then put another piece on top. ___IoI_____the __are one side of the pipe, and the "I" is the diamond cut out metal....and the o is the steel wool...hope this helps(sorry, I couldnt' make the other wall of the pipe..lol)
hope this helps some...

Ok so there is no open hole through the actual pipe. The exhaust must pass through the steel wool as if it was a "steel wool cork" blocking the pipe, if this is what you mean then it sounds like a great idea!
