If I may ask you Michigan pullers a question,, Why does pulling tractors in this state have to have fenders? is this a law, or a safety issue? Not knocking this idea at all,, I was just wondering why??? Thanks,, ChadS

Insurance & safety my friend. It does not always make the most sence in some cases, but you do what you can to keep pulling. I run my little R fenders on Dad's UB. Looks alright and very light.

YES farmall is right,,,back in the 30's when all of these tractors were being made, like oliver, case, john deer, moline, cock shut, just to name a few,All of the tractors heading to Michigan were required to have fenders,it was part of a safety campaign for the introduction of the modern farm tractor, and the requirement just stayed on even to this day,it's just part of our pulling in Michigan, like the law requiring one to hitch your horse to the hitch'in post when in town,,this is still on the books in many towns in alot of states ,even in Michigan,,,,,remember, farming was going from horses to tractors!, and a lot of old timers didn't want to give up there "hay burners" right away,so the companys had to think of a way of selling there tractors, and safety was one of many,,along with the work that could be done in one day compared to the Horse,,,when was the last time you heard of a farmer getting "kicked" by the old plow horse while working out in the field?",,,,did this help?,,,,,

I would rather see a rule requiring Seat Belts, than Fenders..!!

I have seen some Tractors do a Death Dance at 2 1/2 MPH....jumping from ONE rear tire to the Other and back and forth...Shear Luck that the driver got it stopped, or that they stayed on the tractor at all--and NO, they didn't stay in the seat...they were thrown all over and around the seat...!!!

It depends on the assn. Not familiar with any motorsports ins. policy that requires fenders. My opinion: If you fall off your tractor at 4mph or less w/o fenders, lay off the hooch, drugs or whatever...
Anthing we had on the farm older than the 3020's, never had fenders...

Safety and insurance are the primary reasons. Some groups are also trying to keep some of the classes stock or looking like stock. I think it is a good idea. The hotter classes are usually alowed to run non-factory (light weight) fenders.

There are a few pulls in the Central Michigan area that don't require fenders, but not many. My understanding, and I could be wrong, is that it was a safey issue, and for insurance purposes. Usually don't have to be stock equipment, can be homemade and light weight. Wheelie bars are almost as common in this area as the fenders. I think generally it is a good idea, it is a divider between the driver and the tires.

It's not just a good idea it's the law. Most clubs in Michigan inforce this fender law and will not allow you to hook without them.

As far as I know Michigan has no laws covering tractor pull except for the Fair pulls where the state pays premiums. The fair that I supervise the pull for pays premiums 5 places. The last policy I saw from the department of ag.was published in 1998 and only effected us by limiting the RPM and horsepower to 15% over over factory spec. and we cannot exceed 5 mph. Modified tractors are not eligible for premiums. Tractors must be stock appearing. Rules have to be published in the fair book. Jerry

In Michigan there is a law requiring all farm tractors to have fenders. This law went in affect in the 30's. I feel this law was mainly for steel wheels. Not too many pullers know of this law. The clubs that I pull in all have a fender rule. I asked these clubs why and was told its a Michigan law. I don't know if the law is inforced,
never herd of a problem anyway.
