I'm building up a 1948 JD G for local pulling. So far I've got her at .125 over, added a Jerry's cold manifold, a Robert's Pulling Carb, a hot coil mag, and a straight pipe. What spark plugs should I run? Does anyone have an idea what a set of used, standard bore, High Compression Aluminum Pistons are worth for a G? They're in great shape and I don't need them. Thanks for any help.

I would use the REAM adaptors.. If you change the plugs more than once, it will pay for the cost of the adaptors... They will come with a list of plugs to use.. If you do not use the adaptors I would use the Autolites 386's.. (You can get them at your Deere Dealer.) HP will depend on the compression.. without any milling of the head the compression ratio should be about 6.5-6.75 to 1... Which carb from Roberts did you get?? The super 51??? JDGnut

I got the Super 51. I'm running out of time (4 weeks) until the first pull, so I'm not going to have the cam done right away. Hopefully that carb still makes a big difference. I've heared good things...

I'll let everyone know by the second week of June. I've got a pull on June 6th and I'll be spending a lot of time on the dyno.

Puller, Just let me know what you want to spend and I'll get back to you. I was going to put them on the For Sale Ad board today, but I'll wait for your reply. They're in really nice shape. Besides a little carbon on top they look just like my new ones. I'm sure we can work something out. Thanks for the reply.

Chad, I use autolite 388 in my G with almost the same specs your quoating. You see my G every summer in the club. Does the pulling carb add much over stock?

I talked with Robert at this years Gathering of the Green in Moline and he stands by it. He told me straight up that it makes a huge difference on the big cube G's. He said that it will increase airflow by about 28% and up to 22% horsepower gains. It looks really good, so I can't wait to bolt it on and fire her up. Like I said earlier, I'll let everyone know what she dynos once I've got her throwing dirt on those M boys! One of our hired hands just put an LP head on his M that took the compression from 115 psi to 225 psi. We'll see what happens for both of us really soon because neither runs yet. Give me about five weeks. Thanks for the reply.

He bores the carb, with bigger butterflies.. I'm sure there are other little differences.. but is the most noticable..

It will be interesting the dyno... I have one.. one of these days I'll put it on a stock cube G and see if there is much difference at the stock cubes... JDGnut

I've had good luck with C88L or C86 AC's. I think the C86's have been discontinued now though and replaced with C87's.
The pistons...maybe $200+? That's a shot in the dark.
