Cam breaking started it. The broken rod is still free on the journal with good clearance. Mr. Harrington and Mr. Head have a plan.

Hi Tim. What caused the cam to snap? is it too thin where the rod clears the cam? Yes, I can see the cam breaking if that happened, seen a few big cubed olivers blow rods out the bottom and the sides. But the cam did not do it. Lots of torque there, I would say that the rod broke first, then took the cam with it. Where on the rod is it broken? a the crank pin,, half way up,, or at the wrist pin? Chad

Heard last night that the rumor is OHV for Under Pressure when she gets running again? I thought it was a carbon copy to Bears old 880 (Bunyard's), guess they weren't exact if it had a cast cam, cause Duke gave Bear a billet cam. What's up there? Did they hurt there Billet Crank?

Your grapevine has some deep roots!
Not so sure Jacks is billet at present.
Cosmetic damage, as far as I know, at least by the looks of things. Since its waiting for the trip up north there is no need to take any thing apart.

Tim, roller lifters can reduce the loading on the cam if the cam profile isn't made too radical. Using an external oil pump and a crank trigger system like the one made by Electromotive removes a nice bit of load from the cam as well. Another option is adapting the distributor to drive off of the a diesel front drive plate in place of the injection pump. Both makes having a steel cam made much easier as no distributor drive gear has to be cut on the cam. Off course going to and OHC setup is an interesting option.

The oil pump was already belt driven. Duke is picking the motor up this weekend. If he goes ahead with it then it will be OHC. I believe it will be simple enough to do. We are going to build a differant Wauk engine this winter and I hope to go with and OHC. There is an Align boring machine in my buddys shop and he suggest using the new ford V8 cam followers. That opens the door for 7+ inches of stroke.
