I know of a guy going to make axles out of pipe on a John deere A. Will they withstand 95 horse and how thick of pipe could be used? I would be lilery of it. Just wondering what you all thought. I have seen alot of solid axles brake.

I think maybe the word "pipe" gives the wrong impression. I am a drafter/designer by trade and can say if you choose the right steel tubing, you can get much stronger than stock. I'm not sure the weight savings will be that substantial and it may cost some money, but that never stopped many of us pullers from trying anything new. Get out your Machinery's Handbook and look at recomended steel for axles. Compare properties to other steels and make a good choice based on that. You could even make a calculation based on torque, but now I may risk sounding like a geek. Ha-ha. I won't even go in to heat treating chemistry. Let us know how it "turned" out!

You can purchase high strenght double thickness steel tubing that is much stronger than the solid axles.

I think the weight of the tractor.. and the weight class that the tractor pulls in would be something to think about.. Most are using a thick walled Moly.. no idea on how thick... and weld the hub on close the housing... Tubed axles have been around for while.. haven't heard of a problem yet..

That is where we all get a bad rep...someone doing something stupid...like the guy that blew up his steam tractor, a couple of years ago...

Someone will ( I am sure ) show up with a Suicide Throttle...!! Opps..they all DO have a suicide throttle..!! The sled operator should be able to kill the tractor at ANY TIME...too many accidents are happening... Custom axles would be a good idea, IF they are Stronger than any original equipment, but PIPE..?? Tell him to Forget it..!!! Maybe make the rear housing out of Alloy... Even an Alloy engine block...!! Frame..?? NOT axles...!!
